Creating an Effective Play-Action Passing Game • Throw off best run actions. • Must work w/ OL to sell the run w/ low, aggressive sets. • Consider who is being affected by run action when designing routes to be used w/ specific run actions. • Route depth and progression must coincide w/ run action and depth of drop. • Understand what protections are gambles and have a plan. • Type of ball fake must coincide w/ timing of the route, who you are trying to affect, and handoff technique.

Play-action QB Fundamentals • Use hands, eyes, and feet to create flow of defenders. • Use same mechanics as corresponding running play. • Get contact w/ RB. • Set-up keeps + play-action passes w/ good fake after handoff. • Types of fakes: - Empty hand fake (7-step drops and protected boots) - 2-hand ball fake (5-step drops) - 2-hand flash fake (3-step drops) - 1-hand ball fake (Nakeds / increasingly using w/ other drops)
