SeaDataNet - Pan-European Infrastructure for Marine Data Management

SeaDataNet is a pan-European infrastructure that connects National Oceanographic Data Centres and provides harmonized services, data products, and tools for managing marine and ocean data. It offers a range of catalogues, controlled vocabularies, and standard QA-QC procedures. SeaDataNet also provides services for data discovery, access, analysis, and visualization through its Common Data Index (CDI) Data Discovery and Access Service.

  3. Network of distributed data centres with central Portal for harmonised services, data products and tools for users and data centres http://www.seadatanet.org

  4. Set of common standards for metadata and data formats for the marine domain, adapting ISO and OGC standards and achieving INSPIRE compliance • Provision and maintenance of range of pan-European catalogues • Controlled vocabularies for the marine domain (> 160.000 terms over > 60 lists) • Maintenance and dissemination of standard QA-QC procedures, with IODE and ICES • Set of tools to be used by each data centre – for capacity building and standardisation • MIKADO: generator of XML descriptions for SeaDataNet catalogues • NEMO: reformatting software to SeaDataNet formats • Download Manager: local software to control downloading • ODV: Ocean Data View software adapted to SeaDataNet needs • DIVA: interpolation software for product generation adapted to SeaDataNet needs • Services for discovery, access, analysis, visualisation of data and data products

  5. Common Data Index (CDI) Data Discovery and Access Service • provides users with detailed overview and access to large volumes of marine and oceanographic data sets managed by the distributed data centres • index (ISO 19115 – ISO 19139 compliant) to individual data measurements • supported by Controlled Vocabularies and other SeaDataNet catalogues (e.g.Cruise Summary Reports (CSR), Organisations (EDMO) and Projects (EDMERP) ) to harmonise mark-up and to provide linked data services • Data centres use the MIKADO XML editor to generate CDI entries in batch from local databases (after initial mapping)

  6. CDI metadata standard • Common Data Index (CDI) metadata format is marine profile based upon the ISO19115 content standard • upgraded to the ISO19139 schema and made INSPIRE compliant • XML schema implementation for this metadata profile, based on the XML schema defined in ISO 19139:2006 TS
