  7. Impacts on America cont. Patriot Act---expanded the power of federal agencies to monitor anything they consider terrorist activity Examples---read emails, examine telephone databases, financial and medical records Can investigate people without solid proof Do not always need a search warrant
  8. Impact Cont. Suspicion of Muslims increased Prejudice against large groups of peaceful people due to the acts of few Muslim Extremists
  9. Impact on Foreign Policy Who attacked us?---the Middle Eastern terrorist network al-Qaeda led by Osama bin-Laden Why?---Al-Qaeda opposed everything about the US, from its political freedoms & cultural openness to our close ties to Israel
  10. Foreign Policy cont. There was no country to declare war on Pres. Bush declared war on terrorism itself The United States & its Allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 because its Taliban government supported al-Qaeda Taliban was ousted from power
  11. Foreign Policy cont. The US & its allies invaded Iraq in 2003 Pres. Bush argued that Saddam Hussein supported global terrorism & had weapons of mass destruction No connection between Hussein & the 9/11 attacks was ever found No weapons were ever found US helped rebuild Iraq after the war
  12. Foreign Policy cont. The war on terrorism has been long Many terrorists have been captured or killed The Navy SEAL operation on April 29, 2011 ended with the death of Osama bin-Laden who was hiding in Pakistan
  13. Impact on the Economy Immediate Costs: Direct costs of the attacks=$27.2 billion That includes property damage, cleanup, and rebuilding Many lost their jobs, travel stopped Business losses totaled $109 billion
  14. Impact on the Economy cont. New York Stock Exchanged closed for 1 week Stock prices fell drastically Federal Reserve helped keep the economy running
  15. Impact on the Economy cont. Long Term Costs: US has had to shift resources from domestic issues to military efforts Since 2001, about 20% of the US budget has gone to provide domestic security and fight the War on Terror From $350 billion to $750 billion
  16. Impact on the Economy cont. Security concerns have raised business costs Costs of counterterrorism measures have increased the prices of goods for consumers

Impact on Government & Citizenship Americans have always valued personal privacy---a key aspect of individual liberty Difficult to find balance between privacy and security Americans were divided War on Terror showed key role of intelligence agencies like the CIA Many new laws were passed to fight terrorism
