  3. What This Package Will Cover? • The first steps involved in the Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB)

  4. Battlefield Area or Terrain Analysis • This analysis looks at how the ground may effect manoeuvre. • How the weather effects manoeuvre. • Finally, by analysing the ground and weather we can identify obvious routes that the enemy can use to manoeuvre towards an objective.

  5. Before going any further think about how aspects of this piece of ground might effect manoeuvre.

  6. Here are some suggestions. The condition of the road The thickness of the wood Urban areas The gradient of the slopes The depth, width and speed of the river

  7. The Next Step! • Once we have identified aspects of the ground that may affect manoeuvre we highlight these areas on the map by hatching or double hatching the area to denote “slow go” or “no go” areas.

  8. The Next Step! • Then we add the effect of weather. This can be wet, dry or misty. • Weather can effect river depth and width and also the effectiveness of our optical sights, especially in mist/foggy conditions.

  9. The Final Step! • We now have a rough idea of what is the likely approach routes for the enemy and for ourselves. • The next step is to annotate those routes on the map. • One route is called a mobility corridor, a number of mobility corridors makes up an avenue of approach.

  11. The Summary • So, from a blank map we have managed to identify the likely routes that an enemy might take based on the ground and weather. • The next package looks at how the enemy’s doctrine effects how he moves tactically across this same piece of ground.
