Migration Patterns • From east to west • From south to north • Muslim population has grown in Europe. • Asian and Latin American population has grown in the U.S. Demographic transition Fertility rates are lower in industrial nations which slows the rate of population growth. This demographic transition dismisses Thomas Malthus’ claim made in1798 that an unchecked population growth would outstrip food production and lead to famine and epidemics. Why is there a lower birth rate in industrialized nations? Women tend to receive higher education, leading to employment and marry at a later age, having fewer children.
