Bridge to Terabithiaby Katherine Paterson Book Club Leveled Novels Short stories, nonfiction, poetry, Reader’s Theater, and skills passages Research Unit (possibly paired with biography unit) Class Read Aloud Daily SSR

  4. Writing Major compositions: a personal narrative, a persuasive, and an expository research piece Numerous shorter pieces spanning all modes, including poetry and summary Grammar lessons and spelling skills will be integrated into the writing curriculum and average.

  5. Social Studies Overview of American History History Alive! curriculum with individual student workbooks (Thanks, PTA!)

  6. Nifty 50 Club • Students memorize location and abbreviations of all states as well as their capital cities.

  7. Current Events • Class set of student magazine Junior Scholastic • Occasional current event articles (and even political cartoons) brought from home • Study of nonfiction text features, isolated reading skills, note taking, and summarizing

  8. Staying Informed Read & sign your student’s planner every night. Read information and look over graded work in Wednesday folders. Check your email. Make use of Study Buddy numbers in planners when assignment confusion arises. Visit my webpage regularly (navigate from LWB page>teacher websites>5th grade, Burton). Register for txConnect via the LISD website to monitor grades.

  12. Quiz Time Pick up an index card and pen or pencil. Put your name and your student’s name on the top line and number from 1-6. Prepare to take a fifth-grade mini quiz. Give your card to Mrs. Burton as you exit so that it can be scored. Good luck! 3 correct answers= 1 reward ticket for your student 6 correct answers=2 reward tickets for your student
