OBJECTIVES • CORE OBJECTIVE: Analyze the process by which early peoples organized their societies and built advanced civilizations. • Objective 1.1: How did geography affect the early river civilizations? • Objective 1.2: Describe the various cultures in the early river civilizations in relation to social structure and technology. • Objective 1.3: How was religion implemented into each civilizations everyday life? • Objective 1.4: How did each civilization’s government lead to their demise? • THEME: Groups will organize and unify to conquer others and assume their lands. After building their culture they will eventually be conquered by a stronger society.

  7. Geography of Ancient Egypt • Nile River is the longest in the world • It begins in the heart of Africa and runs north to the Mediterranean. • The northern part of Nile River Valley is called Lower Egypt and the southern part is called Upper Egypt. Map NEXT

The Gift of the Nile • Egyptian’s worship Nile as a god • Predictable annual floods bring water and fertile black mud (loess) • The surplus of food Egyptian farmers could grow in this fertile soil made Egypt prosperous. • The Nile also served as a great highway that enhanced transportation and communication.   10. Historians Divide Egyptian History into 3 Major Periods • The Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. • Each was a time of stability, peace, and cultural flourishing. • Periods of upheaval fell between each of the kingdoms.

Builders of the Pyramids • Egyptians believed that a person’s spiritual body (ka) could survive the death of the physical body if the physical body were properly preserved through mummification. • Pharaohs built elaborate tombs, pyramids, to meet their needs after death • They contained food, weapons, artwork, and household goods for the person in the afterlife.
