  1. Add To Table of Contents • Wave Scales Pg. 28 • Seismic waves Pg. 29

  2. Seismic Waves Pg. 29 • Seismology is the study of earthquakes. • Seismograph-instrument that records seismic waves.

  3. Seismic Waves • Body waves-travel through the earth’s interior. 1. P waves- Fastest waves, first to be detected. • Move back and forth parallel to the motion of the wave. • Move through solids, liquids and gases.

  4. 2. S waves - Second fastest • Move perpendicular to motion of wave. • Move only through solids

  5. Surface waves-travel along the earth’s surface. • Slowest moving waves • Cause the most damage during earthquakes 1.Love(L) waves move rock up and down and side to side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-8H4GmSNO8

  6. 2. Rayleigh waves - move with a rolling motion(like a typical wave) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmLkITQOlw

  7. Shadow zone – area on Earth’s surface where no seismic waves from a particular earthquake can be detected.

  8. Measuring Earthquakes Magnitude-strength of an earthquake. • Richter scale Intensity-how much damage an earthquake causes. • Mercalli scale
