  2. Lynching • ‘’By claiming that Emmett’s death was not a lynching, the governor hoped to defend his state from the Northern and liberal press that considered the murder a racially motivated crime.’’ • Defention:toputtodeath,especiallyby hanging, by mob action andwithoutlegalauthority.

  3. Eloquent • ‘’Despite the many testimonies, the clear evidence, and Chatham’s eloquent closing argument, after deliberating for barely and hour, the all-white jury declared the defendants not guilty.’’ • Definition: having or exercising the power of fluent, forceful, and appropriate speech.

  4. Segregationists • ‘’In Greenwood, Mississippi, Judge Tom P. Brady delivered a passionate speech to white segregationists that decided the Supremeness Courts ruling, emphasized the inferiority of the African race, and predicted the destruction of the south if integration were allowed to happen.’’ • Definition: one who favors, encourages, or practices segregation, especially racial segregation.

  5. Condemnations • ‘’The protests and condemnations from civil rights leaders and Northerners poked an already raw nerve in the south.’’ • Definition: 1. the act of condemning. • 2. the state of being condemned. • 3. strong censure; disapprobation; reproof. • 4. a cause or reason for condemning. • 5. U.S. Law. the seizure, as of property, for public use.

  6. Catalyst • ‘’ Emmett Till never planned to be the catalyst for the civil rights movement.’’ • Definition: a person or thing that precipitates an event or change.

  7. Inflammatory • ‘’ Many readers believed every word of Brady’s inflammatory book and became increasingly worried about the negative effects the Brown vs. Board of Education decision would have on their lives and their society.’’ • Definition: tending to arouse anger, hostility, and passion.
