What is Organization Development? • What is it that you and your group want to accomplish? • Talk about our work only makes sense if it starts with a connection to your problem, challenge, or opportunity – that practical matter that you are addressing • What is it that you and your group want to accomplish? What we do (OD)… • Help people get something done (Practical) • Support persons and groups to expand competence to act and realize potential (Developmental) • Create conditions that nurture community (Relational) • Foster human flourishing in service of something larger than “me” (Spiritual) Falcarragh Institute, Ltd.

  5. Client and Consultant Dilemma • You cannot understand what you need to learn • I see something you need to learn. I can’t tell you that in a way that you could understand it; if I could you would not need me or my help • You can only learn it by educating yourself • I cannot teach this to you • You can only educate yourself in action – by beginning to do what you don’t understand • I can create experiences and support you as guide • You must be willing to have the experiences I suggest without knowing what it will be like • You must expect that the results will be greater than the cost of commitment Falcarragh Institute, Ltd.   10. “What” Specific outcome or result that is described in a way so that all agree: “Yes, we will all know it if you see it.” • The kinds of outcomes or results could be anything from the overall results for a year (big What) to an outcome on a small, short-term project (little What) Falcarragh Institute, Ltd.

  11. “How” Goals • Three things we will accomplish this year, their combined results will produce the overall desired results for the year Distribution of resources • Money, time, people, equipment, physical space, etc. • Business plan, strategy, Specific plan of action • What, by whom, by when Work flow/structure • Roles, responsibilities Falcarragh Institute, Ltd.
