  1. Euromed GNSS II / MEDUSA project Civil Aviation EGNOS/GNSS service usage, strategies and recommendations • Airliner : Egypt Air Egypt Air Airlines Egypt national workshop, CAIRO - 12 March 2014 - NANSC

  2. EGNOS Benefits - General • EGNOS Benefits - approach (LPV) in comparison with NPA • Example : Lower DH and lower minima • EGNOS Benefits - approach (LPV) in comparison with Baro-VNAV • Example : Human error and many corrections • EGNOS Benefits - approach (LPV) in comparison with ILS • Example : Doubtful trust in ILS serviceability • GALILEO Benefits • Airline fleet ; related capabilities • Expectations

  3. EGNOS Benefits General • More accurate navigation • More reliable navigation ( use / don’t use , estimated residual positioning error : Integrity ) • ( horizontal Alert Limit from 0.3 NM (556m) to 40 m ) • ( Vertical Alert Limit 50 m ) • Africa has an appropriate location • (EGNOS foot print/EGNOS extension to cover North-Africa ) and is in need • Over half of all accidents occur during the final approach and landing stages

  4. EGNOS Benefits Approach # NPA • Lower decision height , lower minima • Stable Airspeed , ROD* and FPA* (No intermediate step down ) • Flight Director is a command instrument • CFIT decreases • Minimize arrival flight time and hence fuel • Reduce noise levels • # NPA has a low safety record (most common accident/incident cause is descent below MDA(H) LPV benefits • Safety increases • Delay and Cancellation of flights decreases • (i.e. Aerodrome capacity gain in low visibility) • Diversion decreases * ROD : Rate of Descent (ft/min) , FPA : Flight path angle

  5. LPV # NPA Lower DH and lower minima LFBD Bordeaux Merignac RNAV (GNSS) Rwy 05

  6. # Baro VNAV LPV benefits • Baro VNAV is restricted to a minimum temperature • Altimetry is based on ISA density variation • Cold temperature correction • Low pressure correction • Hot temperature neglected although affecting • Destination altimeter subscale setting and human error • Check by RA and EGPWS (2500’ AGL) (workload)

  7. LPV # VNAV Human Error / Many Corrections Effect of one inch high altimeter setting Unusual barometric pressure , such as 28.29 in Hg (low pressure) , when “in Hg” unit is used , may be set , by mistake , to a more usual 29.29 in Hg , resulting-in the true altitude (i.e. the aircraft’s actual height above MSL , being 1000 ft lower than indicated . In most of baro-VNAV approach

  8. #ILS LPV benefits Dependant on an international source Depends on national management / local navaid A/C Flight path is loaded in the A/C Nav. Data Base Broadcasted Extends its service to all runways Each runway is “funded” individually

  9. LPV # ILS TRUST A0999/14 NOTAMR A0998/14 Q) XXXX/QNAAO/IV/B/AE/000/999/….N…..E… A) XXXX B) 1401160733 C) PERM E) TRUST US AND DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE PILOTS SAY. THE ILS IS OKAY AND OPERATIONAL 100%. CREATED: 16 Jan 2014 07:41:00 SOURCE: XXXXYNYX ( FICTIONAL NOTAM ) ‼ It happened : (a) flight(s) was(were) dispatched , with marginal weather conditions , according to the ILS minima, and after their return, the crew reported that the ILS was U/S .

  10. GALILEO Benefits • EGNOS is paving the path for GALILEO • Under civilian control • Interoperable with GPS and GLONASS • More increase in navigation positioning accuracy • Is vital where there is a lack of ground based navigation solution

  11. Airline Fleet Related Capabilities • GPS receivers , autopilot and navigation system will need updating to be EGNOS capable • RNP 4 is in progress ( for RNP 10 A/C’s )

  12. EGNOS/GALILEO Expectations • More extension/coverage over Africa • More routes/airspaces based on GNSS and PBN capabilities • Technical assistance , training and cost-benefit analyses are expected
