Background • Government White Paper on 14-19 Education and Skills • Specialised Diplomas will be available at 3 levels across 14 lines of learning • First teaching from September 2008 for phase 1, September 2009 for phase 2, September 2010 for phase 3 • Build on existing good practice and partnerships

Specialised Diplomas • Will be employer led through the Sector Skills Councils • Attract young people into the sector, widening participation • Provide progression into either employment or further / higher education • Meet the skill and knowledge required for employment • Provide sector relevant learning in real or realistic environments

  6. How are the Diplomas made up? • Principal learning • sector related, determines Diploma title • Additional / specialist learning • specialisation in sector, complimentary area • Generic learning • functional skills, project, personal learning skills • Work experience • 10 days at each level

  9. Land-based and Environmental Specialised Diplomas • Developments to date: • Project team set up: produced plan and brief for 31 March deadline (SSDA/DfES) • Communications group set up • Steering group set up • Working groups to be established (such as FE/HE, WEX/WRL, Schools, AB’s).

Land-based and Environmental Specialised Diplomas • IMPORTANT DATES! • 14-19 event 11 May 06 • Plans approved End May 06 • Learning objectives defined End August 06 • Assessment of current qualifications End October 06 • Assessment of apprenticeships End October 06 • Consultation on draft content Jan – March 07 • Agreement with awarding bodies End March 07 • Final content agreed April 07!! • A lot to do…..!

Level 2 Food Chain Pathway Additional/ Specialist Learning Units from: Meat & Poultry Processing, Nutrition, Hospitality, Animal Welfare Or GCSEs in Languages Geography Principal Learning Units from: Business, Agricultural Livestock / Crops, Manufacturing, Retail Operations, Health & Safety Plan Apply  Do Review/Record Generic Learning Functional skills Personal, learning & thinking skills Project Experiential learning cycle Individual learning plan

Level 3 Animal Health and Welfare Pathway Additional/ Specialist Learning Units from: Pet Store Management, Horse Care, Zoo Animals, Livestock handling Or Level 4 units Principal Learning Units from: Agricultural Livestock, Animal Technology / Management, Animal Welfare, Health & Safety, Business Plan Apply  Do Review/Record Generic Learning Functional skills Personal, learning & thinking skills Project Experiential learning cycle Individual learning plan
