The Bare Facts and Inquiry • Occurred in the following months after the 9/11 attacks • Anthrax:Infectious disease caused by bacteria • Anthrax sent through the mail • 17 Americans were sickened and 5 were killed • Mass media attention • How did the different media interpretations of the 2001 Anthrax killings affect how we viewed the events following 9/11?

The Government P.O.V. • Killer was Dr. Bruce Ivins • This was determined after… • 25 to 30 investigators • Hundreds of thousands of hours working on the case • 10,000 witnesses • 6,000 items of evidence • 5,730 environmental searches • New scientific methods of investigation • 5750 grand jury subpoenas • 7 years of work

  5. Media bias • Sources state the FBI was told to blame Anthrax scare on Al qaeda by White House officials • Claimed it was a second wave of attacks • Wanted to connect it to 9/11 attacks in order to press war on terror

  6. Interpretation • Since attacks were so close to September 11th… • Mass hysteria • Al Qaeda was assumed attackers • Jumped to a multitude of conclusions • Took the back seat to 9/11 investigations • People could only interpret after • However, today it seems to be an afterthought

Relations to “The zero” • Mass hysteria / confusion – • “if you stop to think about the context, what it all means, you’ll just go crazy.” (Walter 167) • “the further away you were form this thing, the more sense it made” (Walter 85) • “Every question we ask is a love letter to our enemies” (54)

  8. Relations to the Zero Continued • Gaps in information – • “What am I doing in the moments I don’t remember?” (Walter 181) • “Doesn’t everyone react to the world as it presents itself? Who really knows more than the moment he’s in? What do you trust? Memory? History? No, these are just stories and whichever ones we choose to tell ourselves… there are always gaps” (Walter 160)
