  3. The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) is a 2008 international observance, declared by the 60th United Nations General Assembly. The Year's activities will span the three years 2007-2009 • Initiative of International Union of Geological Science (IUGS) in collaboration with UNESCO

  4. Why an International Year of Planet Earth? • To demonstrate the great potential of the Earth sciences in the building of a safer, healthier and wealthier Society • To encourage Society to apply this potential more effectively

  12. Stimulate awareness of the societal contributions of the geosciences within national education systems • Increase understanding of the societal importance of the geosciences on the part of decision-makers

  18. ON GOING EFFORTS • Formal structure of management under a corporation (established) • Fund-raising: mainly from Industry, Governments & Foundations in support of activities • National Committees linked to corporation (47 formed) • More Partners: e.g. Geological Surveys

  19. All countries are encouraged and supported by IYPE to form National Committee • Plan and execute national activities in support of IYPE • Participate in regional and international IYPE activities
