  1. Self-Cleaning, Corrosion and Wear Resistant Industrial Components for Water Industry Prof. Pradeep K. Rohatgi Prof. Michael Nosonovsky

  2. Project Goals & Scope (2013-2014) • Developing low cost, durable hydrophobic surfaces • Reduce fouling of components used by IAB member companies (Stainless steel, Hastelloy) by developing low cost, durable hydrophobic surfaces • Reduce ice formation and ice fouling of the components of the interest of IAB member companies (316 SS and 304 SS) by developing icephobic surfaces • Establish relationships between surface roughness, contact angle, corrosion on a quantitative basis

  3. Approach Coating Approaches Mechanically and chemically abrade materials to introduce various surface roughness on metal surface Oxidizematerials varying oxygen partial pressure, temperature and time to create surface micro- and nano-structures that aid in improving contact angle and corrosion resistance Sol-gel formulations: Sols from trimethoxyethylsilane (MTES) containing corrosion inhibitors, rust inhibitors and binders will be coated on cast/ductile iron, brass, steels and hastelloy

  4. Rust resistance surface coating to increase both contact angle as well as corrosion resistance.

  5. Uncoated: i corr: 12.2397 µA/Cm2 corr rate: 174.4 µm/Y CA: 66.67° Coated: icorr: 2.8651 µA/Cm2 corr rate: 34.51 µm/Y CA: 99.16° Copper

  6. Uncoated • icorr: 2.1142 µA/cm2corr rate: 17.16 µm/Y • CA: 54.19 • Coated • icorr: 0.1168 µA/cm2 • corr rate: 1.407 µm/Y • CA: 97.30° 316 SS
