  2. Parents of the gods • The parents of some of the Olympian gods are Cronus and Rhea. Others are children of Zeus.

  3. Definitions • Deity: a godor goddess. • 2. divine character or nature, esp. that of the Supreme Being; divinity. • 3. the estate or rank of a god: The king attained deity after his death. • 4. a person or thing revered as a god or goddess: a society in which money is the only deity. • 5. the Deity, God; Supreme Being.

  4. Sphere of Influence • any area in which one nation wields dominant power over another or others.

  5. Olympian • pertaining to Mount Olympus or dwelling thereon, as the gods of classical Greece. • 2. pertaining to Olympia in Elis. • 3. of, resembling, characteristic of, or suitable to the gods of Olympus; majestic or aloof: an Olympian landscape; an Olympian disdain. • –noun 4. an Olympian deity. • 5. a contender in the Olympic games • 6. a native or inhabitant of Olympia.

  6. Attribute • to regard as resulting from a specified cause; consider as caused by something indicated (usually fol. by to ): She attributed his bad temper to ill health. • 2. to consider as a quality or characteristic of the person, thing, group, etc., indicated: He attributed intelligence to his colleagues. • 3. to consider as made by the one indicated, esp. with strong evidence but in the absence of conclusive proof: to attribute a painting to an artist. • 4. to regard as produced by or originating in the time, period, place, etc., indicated; credit; assign: to attribute a work to a particular period; to attribute a discovery to a particular country. • –noun 5. something attributed as belonging to a person, thing, group, etc.; a quality, character, characteristic, or property: Sensitivity is one of his attributes. • 6. something used as a symbol of a particular person, office, or status: A scepter is one of the attributes of a king. • 7. In the red house, red  is an attribute of house. • 8. Fine Arts . an object associated with or symbolic of a character, office, or quality, as the keys of St. Peter or the lion skin of Hercules. • 9. Philosophy . (in the philosophy of Spinoza) any of the essential qualifications of god, thought and extension being the only ones known. Compare mode1 ( def. 4b ) . • 10. Logic . (in a proposition) that which is affirmed or denied concerning the subject. • 11. Obsolete . distinguished character; reputation.

  7. Provenance • noun place or source of origin: The provenance of the ancient manuscript has never been determined.

  8. Zeus • Jupiter or Jove was the king of the gods in Roman mythology. Zeus washis Greek name. His tree wasthe oak and his bird wasthe eagle. He was very powerful. Zeus escaped his father when he was a baby. He overtook his father, Coronus.

  9. Hades • Hades wasZeus’s brother. He was swallowed by his dad, Coronus. Hades was the god of the underworld and the dead. He wasPluto in Roman myths.

  10. Poseidon • Poseidon was the moody god of the sea. He wasNeptune in Roman myths. He also ruled horses, earthquakes and drought. His castle was deep under the sea. Poseidon was the brother of Zeus and Hades. He drew lots and gained power over the sea.

  11. Hestia • Hestia was goddess of the Hearth. She was gentle and watched over the sacred fire in Olympus. She has sworn by the head of Zeus to be a virgin. She was master over domestic life.

  12. Hera • Hera was the daughter of Coronus and Rhea, sister of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, wife of Zeus, and mother of some other gods. She was the goddess of marriage and birth. Hera was queen of the Olympian deities.
