  1. Section 3-1volcanoes and plate tectonics Taryna Lam Karla Miranda December 10,2007

  2. Volcano • A volcano is a weak spot in the crust that allows lava to pour out creating and destroying land.

  3. Magma • Magma is molten mixture of hot rock that is underneath earths surface.

  4. Lava • Lava is magma that has already reached earths surface.

  5. Ring of Fire • The Ring of Fire is a long belt of volcanoes that occur along the mid-ocean ridges.

  6. Island Arc An island arc is a string of islands.

  7. Hot Spots Is an area where magma comes out from deep within the mantle melts throughout the crust like a blow torch.

  8. What is a volcano? • Eruptions of volcano are dangerous on earth. • As it erupts magma inside it made of molten mixture forces its way out. • When it reaches the earths surface its called lava, as the lava comes out it destroys and creates land.

  9. Location of volcanoes • There are about 600 active volcanoes on earth and the ocean forming along plates. • The major belt of volcanoes is called the Ring of Fire. • Most of volcanoes form along the boundaries that diverge.

  10. Volcanoes at diverging plate boundaries • Volcanoes form along mid-ocean ridges which is called a rift valley under water, and lava pours out making new crust. • In few places like Iceland and Azore island have mid-ocean ridges that come out of the water.

  11. Volcanoes at converging boundaries • Many volcanoes form near boundaries because when a volcano erupts magma is pushed to the sides magma some times pushes it to the ocean trench. • That falls down and goes up when its up it gets cold the weight increases it gets so heavy it goes back down doing the convection current. • Some times they form an island arc.

  12. Hot Spot volcanoes • Hot spots often lie in the middle of the continental or oceanic plates.

  13. What I Learned? • In the lesson from the notes I learned what are convection currents .Also how they work and what they are. We also learn that as lava comes on the surface to create and destroy land.

  14. Presentation has title, mentions member’s names, and includes a complete date. Topic slides are well thought out, informative, full of details, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the subject. Presentation is very creative, animated, and uses many of the formatting techniques learned in class. Student helped gather the information, cooperated with the formatting, and helped the group stay focused by avoiding off-task behavior.
