  1. Phineas and Ferb An Hour of Science

  2. Summer project 1 Phineas and Ferb were in their back yard wondering what they could do for the day.

  3. The Mission They decided that it would be fun to see if Perry the Platypus preferred hamburgers with ketchup, mustard or onion.

  4. Question 1 They’ve come up with the question – What Does Perry Prefer on His Hamburger?. What should they do next? • Come to the conclusion that Perry hates hamburgers. • Write a PROCEDURE (list of steps for the experiment). • Come up with a HYPOTHESIS (an educated guess). • Write their conclusion for their experiment.

  5. Answer… That’s right. They came up with a hypothesis. This is an educated guess about what might happen during the experiment. It comes right after the problem/question.

  6. Which one of these is a good hypothesis? • We think Perry will prefer hamburgers with ketchup. • We think Perry will prefer hamburgers with mustard. • We think Perry will prefer hamburgers with onion. • None of these is a good hypothesis.

  7. Good job! You’re right! None of those would be a good hypothesis. They don’t include a good reason WHY Perry might prefer one hamburger over the other. A good hypothesis might be – Perry will prefer to eat hamburgers with ketchup because we have seen him eat ketchup, but not any other hamburger topping.

  8. Now…What’s Next? Phineas and Ferb have designed their experiment and have found the materials that they need to use. Unfortunately, they’ve forgotten to write down the steps of the experiment. What part did they forget? • Conclusion • Hypothesis • Procedure • Data

  9. Procedure!!! Candice barges in and says, “You have to write down your procedure so that I can repeat your experiment. Once I show mom, you’re sooooo busted!!!”

  10. The experiment Phineas and Ferb set up their experiment. They have one hamburger with ketchup, one with mustard and one with onion. They set all three in Perry’s cage and Perry began to eat the hamburger with Ketchup on it. The boys conclude that Perry prefers hamburgers with Ketchup.

  11. Why is that experiment not valid? • There is no control group • The experiment wasn’t repeated at least 3 times • There aren’t enough variables • Choices A & B

  12. Dr. Doofenshmirtz appears! Wait WaitWait! It’s obvious to an evil genius, like myself, that they are missing some very important parts of their experiment. You always need a CONTROL group!! Even Perry the Platypus knows THAT! You also need to do your experiment at least 3 times. I mean we don’t want Perry to starve…he is my only arch nemesis.

  13. Based on this data, what can Phineas and Ferb conclude? The Data

  14. Conclusion What should the boys conclude from the data they collected? • Perry hates hamburgers. • Perry prefers hamburgers with Ketchup. • Perry prefers hamburgers with Mustard. • Our conclusion wasn’t correct because Perry ate 3 hamburgers with Mustard and only 1 with Ketchup. Perry preferred hamburgers with Mustard.

  15. That’s right! D is the correct answer! You should include the supporting information in your conclusion! Good Work!
