  3. Cause--Effect Some Banks Close: people lose money Over-production of products The Great Depression Breadlines, Hoovervilles, homeless Stock market Crash Black Tuesday Businesses close- up to 25% un-employment People buying on credit Buying stocks on margin

President Herbert Hoover 1929--1933 • Acted conservatively(did not want to hand out relief); instead raised taxes, made the economy worse. • “Hoovervilles” • Finally in 1932, he set up the Public Works Program: Government funded projects to build public resources such as roads and dams http://www.arizona-leisure.com/hoover-dam.htmlhttp://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/hoover/ • Hoover loses to FDR because he was blamed for not doing enough to aid the American people.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) 1933-1945 • “New Deal”: plan to ease American’s • immediate suffering and to prevent future • Depressions: • 1.relief for the hungry and homeless • 2.recovery for agriculture and industry • 3.reforms to change the way the economy worked • FDIC: Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, set up to protect savings, up to $100,000.   11. Roosevelt Fights the Supreme Court • Most of the justices did not support his programs • Struck down laws they felt gave the federal government too much power • 1937 – FDR asks Congress to pass bill allowing him to add up to 6 justices • Court-packing Bill criticized and failed to pass

  12. New Deal Slows Down • Opposition to FDR grows after court packing attempt • Goods produced by industry fell • Unemployment rose • FDR’s use of deficit spending criticized • Deficit spending – using borrowed money to fund government programs
