  1. Funded through Florida International University National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences Impacts from CCA-Treated Wood Within Marine and Terrestrial Environments

  2. Specific Aims • Evaluate the impacts of arsenic from CCA-treated wood by measuring the species of arsenic that are leached from different environmental samples. • Develop methods for arsenic speciation in the particulate phase.

  3. Research Design and Methods • Laboratory Evaluation (Phase I) • Method Development (Myron) • Leaching Experiments/Soil Column (Bernine) • Data Evaluation • Field Evaluation (Phase II) • Deck Sampling (Bernine) • Marine Dock Sampling (Yong) • Data Evaluation

  4. CCA-Treated Deck Study Bernine Khan University of Miami

  5. CCA-Treated Deck Study • Two 6-ft x 6-ft wood deck • 0.4 pcf CCA treated & untreated (control) 6 ft 6 ft

  6. Deck Study • Panels open for soil sampling (arsenic study currently being conducted by FIU-Chemistry (NIEHS) hinge

  7. Aluminum Base 8 ft Decks placed in resin-coated untreated wooden box (8-ft x 8 ft) mounted on aluminum base 8 ft 5° plexiglass

  8. Resin-coated untreated wooden box • Interior lined with plexiglass • Set in open environment - rainfall

  9. Cross-Section of Layers plexiglass resin-coated box impervious liner perforated drainfield pipe 6” PVC pipe sand

  10. Leachate Collection Systems rainwater runoff percolating rainwater

  11. Percolating Rainwater Collection System 2-way valve

  12. Leachate Collection Systems • Analyze for arsenic species • Rainwater runoff data – estimate how much arsenic & rate of leaching from deck to soil • Percolating rainwater – arsenic migration rate through soil

  13. Total As(V) As(III) Arsenic Concentration (mg/L) CCA-Treated vs Untreated Deck Untreated <0.01 mg/L

  14. Results After From Nine Rain Events (Sept 16th – Nov. 25th) • Total Rainfall – 16 inches • Untreated Deck • - Rainwater Runoff - <0.01 mg/L • Rainwater Infiltration - < 0.01 mg/L • CCA-Treated Deck • - Rainwater Runoff - ~ 1.25 mg/L • Rainwater Infiltration - < 0.01 mg/L
