  1. The upgraded GLE database includes assessment of radiation exposure at flight altitudes A. Mishev, I.Usoskin, S. Tuohino & A. Ibragimov University of Oulu alexander.mishev@oulu.fi

  2. Outline • 1. Introduction • 2. Model for computation of effective and/or ambient doe equivalent at flihgt altitudes • 3. Examples • 4. Application(s) • 5. Summary

  3. Introduction An important topic of solar physics, space weather, atmospheric physics is the assessment • Primary SEP parameters: • energy spectrum • anisotropy • using the information from NMs

  4. GLE definition • A GLE event is registered when there are near-time coincident and statistically significant enhancements of the count rates of at least two differently located neutron monitors including at least one neutron monitor near sea level and a corresponding enhancement in the proton flux measured by a space-borne instrument(s). • Poluianov et at. Sol. Phys. 2017

  5. Global neutron monitor network

  6. Model for computation of effective dose rate at aviation altitudes Effective dose rate Yield function For GCRs

  7. For the GCRs spectrum – force field model 1. Data mostly based on NM data analysis, when available • 2. The computations are performed for various reconstructions of SEP • spectra, available in literature, thus for some events there are several results 3. An conservative isotropic distribution of SEPs is considered

  8. Comparison with measurements and models

  14. SUMMARY • A new database for assessment of radiation doses at flight altitude related GLEs iscreated under VarSiTi/SCOSTEP support and incorporated to the InternationalGLE database (gle.oulu.fi). • The upgraded databaseprovides, for each GLE event, where possible, information on the estimated energy/rigidity spectra of SEPsand the corresponding computedeffective doses at cruise flight altitude of 35 kft • Thecomputations are performed for various reconstructions of solar energetic particlesspectra, available in literature, thus for some events there are several results. • 4. The maximum effective dose rates at the aviation altitude of 35 kft is computed. • 5. A highly significant correlation between the maximum effective dose rate and the NM count rate increase was found – proxy for exposure assessment.
