  2. How much do you know about Penguins? Use your KWL Chart. Complete What you already know, and what you want to learn from this lesson.

  3. Penguins: Birds that Swim • Penguins are very unusual birds. They live in the Antarctic or at the equator, swim instead of fly, and are adapted to their environments in many interesting ways. Locate the Antarctic on the globe, maps, or world atlas.

  4. Thematic Unit ObjectivesStudents will be able to: • Identify different types of penguins by reading and researching different resources. • Compare and contrast three different types of penguins with 80% accuracy. • Produce a PowerPoint Presentation about penguins implementing multimedia tools. • Examine the environment, diet, breeding and life cycle of four different species. • Locate geographic locations using world maps, and globes. • Participate in online activities, quizzes, and Zoomerang survey. (Print quiz results (hardcopy) and e-mail results to teacher)

  5. Classroom Activities • Each student will work in cooperative groups of 4’s to research information and develop the PowerPoint presentation. • Read Independently, listen to audio tape, watch videos, and or take notes from transparencies and class discussions. Computer Lab • Begin to work on research via various web sites. • Visit websites listed on handout sheet. • Participate in the online treasure hunt of penguin facts. • Type information in word document and save at the end of class. • Work on PowerPoint presentation beginning on day 2

  6. Participation • All students are required to participate, share information and engage in the learning experience.

  7. EvaluationEvaluations will be assesses by a rubric that includes the following criteria: Research Presentation Spelling and Grammar Cooperative Group Participation Sharing
