  1. Specific Heat of a Metal Calorimetry Objective: to deterimine the specific heat of a metal using a calorimeter and water as a heat trap

  2. Devise a method: • Goal: Heat a piece of metal to a measurably hot temperature and transfer the metal to a cold environment without losing energy to the environment during the transfer.

  3. General assumptions: • Heat lost by metal = heat gained by the surroundings • Heat is the movement of thermal energy and NOT the same as temperature, but related to temperature. • Heat (q) • Q=mCp∆T where Cp is specific heat • Specific heat is amt. of energy required to raise 1 gram 1 °C • For water, the Cp is 4.18 J/g°C (this is also called 1 calorie)

  5. Analysis and Conclusion • Calculate the heat gained by the water (which is the same as that lost by the metal). • Using this calculation, calculate the Cp of the metal. • Looking at the table of Cp’s, and other properties of your metal, which metal (s) did you likely test? • Calculate the % error using the accepted values for Cp

  6. Questions: • What other properties were used besides Cp to identify your solid? • Why is water an excellent material to use in the calorimeter? • Calculate the Cp of a metallic element if 314 J of energy are needed to rais the temperature of 50.0g of the sample from 25.0°C to 50.0°C. • Propose a way to determine the Cp of a metal like sodium which reacts with water.
