Fact or Opinion? • By 1849, the gold rush was under way. • The gold rush was the most exciting time in American history. • Facts: • Tell what is happening or what has happened • Can be proven • Opinions: • Tell how the writer or speaker feels about something • Cannot be proven • May include words such as in my opinion or I think.

Fact or Opinion? • Prospectors should have the right tools to do their jobs well. • Gold miners used a pan and water to separate gold from dirt. • Most women who came to the gold fields did not look for gold. They cared for their families, grew vegetable gardens, or took jobs in nearby towns. Women sometimes made money cooking or doing laundry for miners. I think working in the mines would have been the most exciting way to earn a living.
