  2. “The Life of David – 25” • We have carefully charted the course of David’s journey from the palace to the desert and the many ups and downs of his soul along the way. • In the last scene we left David, weary after the long journey, together with all the people at the fords of the Jordan.

  3. “The Life of David – 25” • Spiritual insight returns; honesty is welcomed; tensions are acknowledged. • He cannot let the significance of his journey to exile fade away into the desert dust.

  4. “The Life of David – 25” • Why poetry? you ask. “A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.” • The psalm is a devotional masterpiece, which gives the reader a privileged look inside David’s soul at perhaps its finest hour.

  5. “The Life of David – 25” • Appetites Are Intensified (63:1-4). 1O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psa. 63:1)

  6. Psalms 63:2-3 2I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

  7. Psalms 63:4 4I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

  8. “The Life of David – 25” • Two things in the wilderness heightened his hunger for God. • The first was the appearance of the landscape. • The second thing that sharpens David’s appetite for God is his memory.

  9. “The Life of David – 25” • There are no earthly gateways to open his five senses to heaven; • no sacred steps to climb; • no smell of fragrant incense;

  10. “The Life of David – 25” • no piercing sound of the shophar; • no taste of hot shew bread; • no holy sight of the ark glistening underneath the wings of the cherubim--and no music.

  11. Psalms 63:2 2“I have seen you (i.e. with this longing)... in the sanctuary.”

  12. “The Life of David – 25” • So through metaphor and memory David recreates those wondrous moments when he beheld God in glory and power within the sanctuary.

  13. Psalms 63:3 3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. (Psa. 632-3)

  14. “The Life of David – 25” • And so in the desert, with no choir, no worship leader, no instruments and no sacrifices, David worships God with fullest expression of body and soul.

  15. “The Life of David – 25” • The Soul is Satisfied (63:5-8). 5My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. 6On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. (Psa. 63:5-6)

  16. Psalms 63:7-8 7Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 8My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

  17. “The Life of David – 25” • Verse 5 marks a radical change of mood in the poem. • Most of us would be haunted by fear, wearied by the monotony, or restless, but for David, alone on his bed, the ache of memory drives his gaze upward in concentrated meditation.

  18. “The Life of David – 25” • His soul, once parched with thirst, now not only drinks, it eats--and not mere food, but the richest of delicacies, marrow and fatness, until his soul is sated. • Under the shadow of those wings--a canopy of protection—David’s soul sings.

  19. “The Life of David – 25” 8My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me (Psa. 6:8, NIV). 8 My soul followeth hard after thee (Psa. 6:8, KJV).

  20. “The Life of David – 25” • Isn’t it ironic that the “ache” of the wilderness actually becomes the “gate” to heaven? • Yet so often we miss it, because we try to drown out the pain by feeding ourselves with idols instead of allowing God to feed us.

  21. “The Life of David – 25” • Vision Is Clarified (63:9-11) 9They who seek my life will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. (Psa. 63:9)

  22. Psalms 63:10-11 10They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. 11But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God's name will praise him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

  23. “The Life of David – 25” • Having been fed by God, everything now comes into focus and David sees the end of his distress. • Not only does David get a clear vision of their end, he sees his own end: 11But the king will rejoice in God (Psa. 6:11)

  24. “The Life of David – 25” • Will it work for you, though? • Will God meet you in your wilderness? 8Your loyal-love is better than life.In the shadow of your wings I sing for joy (Psa. 6:8).
