  3. UNIT6 Formation of the different types of rocks Formation of magmatic rocks Magma (very hot masses of molten minerals) rises up slowly through the lithosphere towards the Earth’s surface. The magma that does not reach the surface cools down slowly and forms plutonic rocks. The fragments sink to the sea floor as sediment. Over time they build up and form layers.
