Learning Objectives • Learn about the built-in apps, including the accessibility tools/features, that are available in “i” devices. • Discuss the differences and similarities between the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. • Learn about some the accessories that provide greater levels of access to iOS devices.

  6. What are ‘i’ Devices? • Today, we’ll review the: • iPod touch • iPhone • iPad • Other portable devices available from Apple (No support for apps): • iPod classic • iPod nano • iPod shuffle

  7. ‘i’ Devices cont.… • iPod Shuffle (Cost: $49) • Small, portable audio playback device – more for accessing music, audiobooks, and podcasts • No LCD screen – has a big clickable control wheel • Storage: 2GB; Battery life: Up to 15 hrs. • Accessible – Voiceover button (battery status, song, playlists) • iPod Nano (Cost: $149-$179) • New design – same size as an iPod shuffle, however, it includes more storage and a Multi-touch LCD screen – Support music, audiobooks, podcasts, FM radio, and photos • Storage capacity: 8GB, 16GB; Battery life: up to 15 hours • Accessibility – Voiceover, adds high contrast settings, mono audio • iPod Classic • No accessibility features

  9. ‘i’ Devices cont.… iPod touch • HD retina display, Multi-touch LCD screen, front/rear cameras, gyro + accelerometer, latest iOS (v4.3) • Support music, audiobooks, eBooks, applications, podcasts, video, photos, web browsing, email, maps, HD video recording/editing, and Facetime • Storage capacity: 8GB, 32GB, 64GB • Battery life: 40 hrs.(audio), 7 hrs.(video) • Host of accessibility features • Cost: $229-$399

  10. ‘i’ Devices cont.… • Latest updates with iPod Touch • iPod Touch is now in its 4th generation • Improvements over 3rd generation • Faster processor and increased RAM • Longer battery life • Retina display for improved resolution • Lighter weight • Front and rear-facing cameras • How does it compare with the iPhone? • iPod touch is basically the iPhone without the cellular 3G or 4G service • Its much cheaper to own, you can access all of the same apps, but you are limited by your ability to make cellular phone calls (calls can be made over Wi-Fi using a voice-over-IP app like Skype or Fring)

(audio), 10 hrs. (video), Up to 7 hrs. (talk time), up to 6 hrs. (internet) • Cost: Varies

  12. ‘i’ Devices cont.… • Things to know about the iPhone • Improvements over iPhone 3GS • Video chat capabilities with front and back camera. • Larger main camera with higher megapixel. • Flash feature for the camera. • Larger battery for 40%longer battery life. • Microslim rather than regular slim. • Higher resolution. • Cons: smaller screen, a little heavier, hardware issue (antenna) • iPhone 3GS still available for $49!! • iPod touch is basically the iPhone without the cellular 3G or 4G service • What is the difference between 3G and 4G service? • 4G is essentially the next generation of mobile phone network connectivity. 3G can theoretically reach download speeds of up to 3MB/s (average is closer to 1MB/s), while 4G can reach theoretical speeds 10 to 100 times faster than 3G. • Few 4G phones on the market, 4G areas are limited to major cities

  13. ‘i’ Devices cont.… iPad 2 • 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, Multi-touch, front/rear cameras, gyro + accelerometer + compass, latest iOS (v4.3), dual microphones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, support for 3G service in certain models (with either AT&T or Verizon) • Support music, audiobooks, eBooks, applications, podcasts, video, photos, web browsing, email, maps, HD video recording/editing, and Facetime • Comes in White or Black • Storage capacity: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB • Host of accessibility features

  14. ‘i’ Devices cont.… • iPad 2 cont.… • Battery life: Up to 10 hrs. • Cost: Varies – start at $499 for 16GB Wi-Fi model • Support for AirPlay – wirelessly stream photos, videos, or music to your HDTV or wireless speakers • Support for AirPrint devices – wireless printing from iPad

  15. ‘i’ Devices cont.… • Things to know about the iPad 2 • Improvements over original iPad • Video chat capabilities with new front and back cameras. • Improved, faster processor – went from single-core to dual-core • Slightly less in weight than original iPad – 33% reduction in device thickness. • Updated cellular radio for better 3G coverage

Important Facts about the iOS • ‘iOS’ is Apple’s mobile operating system software • Arguably, the most exciting mobile operating system in the world today!! • For the most part, iOS versions are the same across all platforms (i.e., iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad). The latest version out there is iOS version 4.3. • v4.3 is a free upgrade for certain iOS capable devices: • iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM model (AT&T) • iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation models • iPad and iPad 2 • What does this mean to have the same version of all devices? • More uniformity in terms of accessibility • No learning curve - If you know how to use one device, it is easy to use another • User experiences are the same! • iOS 5 coming some time this fall…No details yet, but Hadley will update you when the time comes!

Important Facts cont.… • Features available on ‘iOS’ devices • Wi-Fi connectivity • 3 or 4G services on iPhone and iPad specific devices. • iTunes and App Store • Voice memos • Calendar – compatible for syncing with Outlook • E-Mail – compatible for syncing with Outlook • Notes • Weather • Maps • Compass • Alarm/timer/stop watch • 100,000s of apps to download for free or minimal charge, including games, business apps and more (sign-up for Seminars@Hadley for the July 21, 2011 seminar of “Going Ape for I Apps”.)

  19. iOS Accessibility (i.e., iPod touch, iPhone, iPad)

Accessibility features • VoiceOver – Same gesture-based screen reader that is available on Mac OS • Available on the iPad, iPhone 3GS/4G, and iPod Touch • Support for up to 21 different languages • Very important feature: Can be enabled without sighted assistance using a compatible screen reader and latest version of iTunes

  21. Accessibility cont.… • VoiceOverreadingfeatures: • Voice rate adjustment • Rotor adjustment – Text navigation by character/word • Speak auto-text • Full support for all built-in applications (i.e., Phone, Mail, iTunes, Safari, Maps)

Accessibility cont.… • Zoom/Contrast Settings: • Very important feature: Can be enabled without sighted assistance using a compatible screen reader and latest version of iTunes • Allows full-screen magnification • Double tap with 3 fingers instantly zooms in and out 200%. Double tap and drag 3 fingers to adjust magnification between 100% and 500% • Reverse video can be used with both Zoom and VoiceOver

  23. Accessibility cont.… • Other notablefeatures: • Tactile buttons • Audible, visible, and vibrating alerts • Downloadable, assignable ringtones • Support for Bluetooth compatible refreshable braille displays. Braille displays with input keys can be used to control iOS

  24. Accessibility cont.… • Support for playback of captions (open, closed, subtitles) • Instant messaging/chat • Apps available in App Store (e.g., AIM, Yahoo. MSN, Google Talk) • Multimedia Message Service (MMS) – supports text messages with multimedia attachments • TTY Support – requires iPhone TTY adapter

Accessibility cont.… • Audible, Visible, and vibrating alerts • Visual Voicemail • Allows you to view all of your voicemails at once, read in order of preference • Control playback • Mono Audio – route both audio channels into each earbud so that you can hear both channels in each ear (very useful for individuals with hearing loss in one ear)

  26. Accessibility cont.… • Notable Features: • Video Chat using Facetime • Users have the ability to chat in real-time using front-facing cameras on the Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch • Free for iPhone and iPod touch users, $0.99 in Mac App Store for Mac users

  27. Accessibility cont.… • Stereo headset – control music playback, answer/end calls • On-screen keyboard with predictive text entry – learns as you type, allow user to increase text input speed over time

  28. Accessibility cont.… • Voice Control • Supports 21 different languages • Allows user to play music and make phone calls

Available accessories for iOS devices • Check for the “Made For iPhone/iPad/iPod” logo to ensure device will work. • Bluetooth qwerty keyboard support. • Bluetooth refreshable Braille display. • Speakers – portable, home and waterproof. • Headphones – earbuds, sound-isolating, with built-in microphone, Bluetooth earpiece. • Remote controllers • Adaptors/connectors for the car, boat or home stereos. • Cases, cases and more cases for every occasion.
