  1. 5C Benchmark Book Report Grade 5 2010-2011

  2. 2-Part Book ReportPart 1… • You will be completing a book report poster showcasing your benchmark book. • The poster will be displayed around the room, hopefully inspiring others to read your book! • Posters should be completed in your best writing. That means incredibly neat and precise. Include enough details to show that you have read the book and will interest others! • Think about the final presentation. What looks good on a poster? Neat writing, color, etc.

  3. Part 2 – Written Report • You will submit 2 of your best ever written paragraphs showcasing your knowledge of your book and your writing skills. • The first paragraph summarizes your book. • The second paragraph shows your opinion of the book. • Follow the next steps to create an awesome book report!

  4. Name, Date, Title and Author FIRST STEP: At the top right hand side of the page:Write your name and the date; Skip a line and write: Book Title and Name of Author

  5. Paragraph 1 (has 5 sentences) • You need to open with a leading sentencethat grabs the readers attention. • Ideas for 1st Sentence: • Ask a hook question – Have you ever wished you had magical powers? • Pull a short quote from the book. • Point out a terrific part. • Tell why the book was great or good. • 3 supporting sentences summarizing the main elements of the book: • a) Setting; - Where does the story take place? • b) Characters – Who is in the story? • c) Problem – What are the characters faced with? Remember don’t tell them how the problem is solved or how the story ends, you want your audience to remain interested and curious to read the book themselves. • Concluding Sentenceoutlines who would enjoy reading this specific book and genre.You need to identify the genre: fantasy, sci-fi, realistic fiction, biography, historical fiction, etc..

  6. Paragraph 2 • In the 2nd paragraph you want to include yourpersonal opinionsabout the book and how parts relate to your personal life. • This paragraph is strictly about you and your thoughts, and personal enjoyment. • Ponder some of the questions below to help you write a 5 sentence personal reflection about the story: • What feelings did you have as you read the story? Was it good to feel this way? • What words does the author use that you might want to use in your own writing? Why? • Have you had experiences similar to a character in the story? Explain • Was there a passage that you found meaningful? Explain why. • How did the story change your thinking? Or… How can you show how it validated or affirmed your thinking? • Do you or don’t you recommend this book? Give reasons to back up your opinion.

  7. Presentation • Think about how you are going to present your poster and book report in an informative and inspiring way! • Practice your presentation • Present to your report to your classmates.
