2. Title Meaning Sydney Carton is not a man with a lot of charm. Any charm he does have, however, he never displays when he goes to visit the Manettes. He had been going there regularly for a whole year, and he always spent his time there lying around in a grumpy mood. When he said anything, he spoke well, but his apathy cast a shadow over him, and his good heart rarely shined through.

4. Summary • At first Mr. Carton wandered aimlessly around Dr. manette’s house like he normally did, then he was struck by an idea. He walked purposefully to Dr. Manette’s door. • He finds Lucie there alone. When she sees him, she immediately notices that he’s even less well than he usually is. • Lucie asks what the matter is, and then from there he tells Lucie his feelings. • He tells her that although he is a hopeless case and can never reform, she revived his old dreams of leading a good life. • Lucie does not encourage his romantic affection, but does make it clear that she has positive feelings for him and she says shes wants to help him redeem himself • Carton states that it is too late; he knows his nature, and he will only sink lower. • He wants her to know how deeply he loves her and that he would freely give his life for her and anyone she loved. • However, Carton, unlike Darnay or Stryker, has no intention of seeking Lucie’s hand in marriage. He does not feel like he is worthy of marrying her.

5. Literary Terms Repetition- The return of a word, phrase, stanza form, or effect in any form of literature. Repetition is an effective literary device that may bring comfort, suggest order, or add special meaning to a piece of literature. “Be comforted!” he said, “I am not worth such feeling, Miss Manette. An hour or two hence, and the low companions and low habits that I scorn but yield to, will render me less worth such tears as those, than any wretch who creeps along the streets. Be comforted!”(pg 158) Imagery- Language that appeals to any sense or any combination of the senses “...when the sight and scent of flowers in the City streets had some waifs of goodness in them for the worst, of health for the sickliest, and of youth for the oldest…”(pg 155) Pathos - The quality in prose that evokes in the reader a feeling of pity or compassion “She was pale and trembling. He came to her relief with a fixed despair of himself which made the interview unlike any other that could have been holden.” (pg 156)
