  1. Not only is surfing a very popular sport, but it also is regarded as a safe sport with a low overall risk of injury. Most injuries are mild. But like in any sport or physical activity, accidents might happen with the main cause of injury being contact with a surfer’s own board or someone else’s board. Other common causes include ‘wiping out’, submerged rocks or flying surfboards.

  2. Common injuries from surfing include lacerations like cuts and scrapes, sprains, bruises, back pain, dislocations and fractures, and swimmer’s ear and surfer’s ear. To prevent injury, you should first learn to surf, LA (take surf lessons), use the right gear, be aware of the surfing etiquette, check the environment, and know yourself and the sport.

  3. Warm-up- Warming up helps prepare the body for the strenuous activity of surfing, thus guarding against muscle injury. A yoga salute to the sun sequence, surf specific lunge, etc. are examples of some warm-up exercises. (310) 902-7737

  4. The biggest benefit of a warm-up is increased blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles, smoother muscle contraction leading to smoother and efficient surfing.

  5. Stretching- The pre-surf stretching is an important part of your surfing routine since it allows the joints to move smoothly through a full range of motion, thus enhancing performance in the water and reducing risk of injury. Make sure you stretch all the main muscle groups and don’t enter the water cold. Signing up for surf lessons will help you gain more insight into surf fitness training.

  6. Flexibility- Good flexibility is the key to performing well at any sport, which is all the more important for a physical sport like surfing. Practice touching your toes, do a bit of yoga, or do anything that will help you become more flexible. Instructors of surf schools/camps will guide you on the several different types of stretching that will benefit your surfing.

  7. Rest and Sleep- Adequate rest and sleep is essential for a surfer to cope with lots of water time and stay injury free. Try and maintain a regular sleeping pattern. Good Nutrition- Nutrition helps fast recovery from surfing by refilling glycogen stores and by offering necessary protein and water.

  8. The other areas that you’ll need to work on include your core, upper and lower body, swimming ability, breathing and balance to be able to function well in the water. There cannot be any better excuse than surfing to start getting into shape and live more healthily.
