  2. Characters • Joey: curious; clever; adventurous; (like grandma) Grandma: ridiculous; smart; liar(in a good way); nice(sometimes) Mary Alice: sweet; scared( of the tomcat); curious

  3. 1929Shotgun Cheatham’s Last Night Above Ground • In this chapter, Joey and Mary Alice have their first summer at grandma’s. Even being city kids, Joey and Mary Alice have never seen such a crazy town.

  4. Problem • Shotgun Cheatham dies • It occurs because he is bankrupt

  5. Solution • Grandma lied that he was in the Civil War, and everybody believed her. A reporter came to Grandma’s house and Grandma made Shotgun Cheatham look like he came back from the dead. The reporter got scared and left.

  6. Setting • Grandma Dowdel’s old house • The rustic town • 1929
