  7. Morning Report

  8. Morning Report • The first ½ hour - Cases presented by the night float team. • The second ½ hour - Cases presented by PGY-2’s, PGY-3’s and PGY-1’s during the second half of the year. • Firm/Team based (eg. HA, HB etc ) or a case from subspecialty consult service. • Please ask the attending on your team or subspecialty attending to join morning report if possible. • Presentation: • Cases should be presented in PowerPoint format. • Keep number of slides to a minimum. • Goal is to generate a discussion with learning points. • Night float cases are informal and do not require powerpoint slides.

Morning Report Attendance: • Mandatory for all PGY-2 and PGY-3 except when you are in ICU/CCU/ER/MAR-D • Mandatory for all PGY-1 on electives. • PGY-1 on floors are excused, but are encouraged to attend if time permits. • Attendance will be taken during first 15 minutes. • Must attend at least 70% conferences.

  10. Noon Conference • Every day at 12:00 except on Thursday in Dorrance 119 • Didactic lecture on Inpatient care / Primary care core topics. • 70% attendance is required.

  11. Chief Rounds • Monday 9:00 – 10:15 in Dorrance 409 • Mandatory for all house-staff except when in ER/ICU/CCU/Night Float • Usually run by Dr. Parrillo and Dr. Rajput and a subspecialty attending • Interactive discussion about core clinical topics • 2-3 cases prepared by PGY-3 on teaching rotation with literature review on the topic

Grand Rounds • Every Thursday at 11:00 AM in E&R building Room 240 • Mandatory for all house staff except in ER/ICU/NF. • Presented by Cooper Faculty or Outside speakers • It is followed by: • 1st Thurs – House Staff Meeting • 2nd Thurs – Journal Club • 3rd Thurs – M&M • 4th Thurs – Monthly exam

  13. Journal Club • Second Thursday of the month • 12:00-1:00pm In E& R Building Room 240 • Lunch is Provided  • Presented by PGY3 on SBP elective • Articles are emailed out the week before- for review prior to conference

  14. M&M Conference • Conference to improve patient safety and patient care • On third Thursday of month at 12:00 after Grand rounds in E&R building Room 240 • Mandatory for all housestaff • Case is prepared by PGY-3 on SBP rotation.

  15. Literature in Medicine • For all PGY-1’s one week night per month in the second half of the year (5-7pm) • Coverage and dinner are provided  • Facilitated by Dr. Headly and Emily

  16. Intern Survival Series • A 2 week conference for the incoming interns scheduled in July from 2-4 pm • Highlights most common issues that you will encounter on the floors.

  17. Autopsy Conference • Conducted once every 6 months. • An interesting case presentation followed by autopsy in Pathology lab.

  18. Rotations • General Medicine Floors • Teaching Services- HA, HB, HC, HD, HP, H/O • Non Teaching Services- HH1, HH2, HH3 • ICU/INCU • CCU/PCU • Electives • Night Float • Consults

CLINICS • One ½ day session per week for continuity clinic • You have to attend clinic while on all rotations except ICU, CCU/PCU, Night float, ER, MAR-D • Categorical interns will get 1 month of Ambulatory in 3rd year. • If you are post overnight call on your clinic day, you have to reschedule it on some day during same week/next week or swap your call.

  20. New Innovations • www.New-Innov.com • Used for evaluations, duty hours, procedures and rotation cirriculae. • Remember to log your duty hours in a timely fashion. • Log all procedures- ABGs, Central Lines, Arthrocentesis etc.

  21. DICTATIONS • A concise summary of the patient’s hospital stay. • Dictated using a phone line at the time of discharge. • Transcribed by an operator and sent to the outpatient Primary Care doctors and Consultants.

  22. Jeopardy • Designed to provide coverage for emergencies only • Acute personal/family illness • Unforeseen errors in scheduling • You will be on “Jeopardy” for 1-2 blocks during a year • While on jeopardy, • you are required to be available on Phone and beeper 24 X 7 • Respond to pages within 15 mins. • Be available for clinical duties within 1 hr.

  23. Jeopardy • If you covered someone while you were on Jeopardy, that person is expected to pay you back. • Following services are covered by Jeopardy system: • ICU • CCU • NF • Floor services if it occurs on more than 2 consecutive days. • Electives

  24. Amion www.amion.com This is your access to your schedule including rotations & call. It also lists all residents/fellows in other department that are on call. You have the ability to swap calls and shifts.

  25. Non Academic Activities • Partly funded • Organized by the Social Committee • Alternates between Philly and NJ

  26. How to Make Friends • Communicate with nurses/ancillary staff • Clean up after yourselves. • Leave things as you found them! • Never use the unit secretary’s phone or chair. • Remember: We are all members of the same team – medical students, nurses, nurse tech, physical therapist, social worker, home care coordinator, case manager, transporter, pharmacy courier …..EVERYONE IS PART OF YOUR TEAM !!

  27. Dress Code • No jeans or t-shirts. • ALWAYS wear a lab coat, even over scrubs. • No open toed shoes/slippers/sneakers. • Ties are required for males. • You may wear scrubs only if you are on call or post call.

REMEMBER • BE NICE to everyone !!! • Respect everyone, that’s the way to earn respect for yourself !! • Always work as a team ! • Don’t be afraid to ask questions ! • Our doors are always open - • You can always get help from residents, Chief residents or Attendings but if desperate – remember this magic phone number 8758 ! !!! IT DOES GET BETTER !!!
