  1. NCAA SCORING& LIBERO TRACKINGPROCEDURES – 2017

  2. This presentation must be viewed with Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 or newer. • This presentation is beneficial for scorers and libero trackers at any experience level: • New Scorers – The majority of the slides follow parts of a “sample set” designed to cover the basics of using the NCAA Volleyball scoresheet. It is recommended that you use a blank scoresheet to follow along point by point. • Experienced Scorers – The presentation covers new sections of the scoresheet and serves as a quick resource. The following “Contents” information will easily guide you to the slide that covers the particular area you’re interested in.

  3. Contents • 2017 Rule Changes and Points of Emphasis • Scorer Responsibilities • Scorer Tools • Scenario – Scoring a Sample Set • Non-deciding Set Scoresheet • Pre-set Procedures • Team Lineup Sheets • Libero Tracking Sheet (LTS) • Sample Set - Play Begins • Recording the Libero Serving Position • Recording Substitutions • Recording Timeouts • Recording Sanctions • Referee Mind Change • Referee Corrections • Unusual Situations • Exceptional Substitution • Post-set Procedures • Deciding Set Procedures • Challenge Review System (CRS) Scoring Procedures

  4. 2017 SCORINGRULE CHANGES AND POINTS OF EMPHASIS

  5. REVIEW 2016 Point of Emphasis • Computerized Scoring • Currently two products on the market • DataProject E-Scoresheet • VolleyWrite • Links to training for the above products located on the PAVO.org website under Rules and Tools > Scorer Tools (direct links are below) • DataProject training videos • VolleyWrite training videos • NCAA Requirements for Using Computerized Scoring • Obtain a roster or player list from each team (or a spectator program) • Must have a spotter, even though the products handle both scoring and libero tracking • Must have an instantaneous back-up of the electronic file as the match progresses in case of computer failure; for example, a jump drive back-up • Must have printed scoresheets and LTS on hand in case the need arises to switch to manual scoring

  6. 2017 New Rules Affecting Scorers • Rules are changed only in even-numbered years, so there are no rule changes for the 2017 season. However, the Challenge Review System (CRS) Rule (#18) is now an optional rule that may be used by all Divisions. 2017 Point of Emphasis • All requested protests are to be noted on the Scoresheet • In the Comments section, make a note (even when a protest is denied by the referees); for example: 18-16, Protest requested by State, denied as judgment.

  7. Scorer – General Responsibilities • Arrival Time – Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to match time, ready to work. Avoid being overly friendly with fans, players or coaches. • Attire – Wear a polo shirt (preferably the same uniform polo shirt worn by the referees, with the “Volleyball Certified Official” embroidered on one sleeve), navy slacks, white socks and white athletic shoes. Check with the school or conference to see if one of the alternate-colored uniform polos is acceptable (gray or medium blue); if not, the polo should be white. PAVO-certified scorers wear the certification patch on the right chest-area of the uniform polo shirt. • Tools – It is a good idea to bring extra pens (both blue or black and red).

  8. Scorer – General Responsibilities • Prior to the match and each set, the scorer: • Registers the data of the teams; • Reviews the lineup information submitted by each team for completeness and accuracy; and • Records the starting lineup of each team from the lineup sheet.

  9. Scorer – General Responsibilities • During the match, the scorer: • Records the points scored and ensures the accuracy of the visible scoreboard; • Monitors each team’s serving order; • Records timeouts and player substitutions, monitors the number of substitutions used, and informs the second referee when the 12th through 15th substitutions are used by a team; • Notifies the second referee immediately before the final point of the set and also when the eighth point is scored in the deciding set; • Records sanctions and other events as instructed by the second referee (for example, exceptional substitutions); • In a match where the CRS is used, records accepted challenges; • Records all requested protests (including those denied by the referees) in the Comments section of the Scoresheet; • Records all other events as instructed by the second referee (for example, exceptional substitutions or prolonged interruptions); and • Refers coaches’ or team members’ questions regarding scorer information to the second referee.

  10. Scorer – General Responsibilities • After the set, the scorer: • Records the final set results; • Checks the scoresheet for accuracy; and • Signs the scoresheet.

  11. ScorerTools • Scoresheets – At least four non-deciding set scoresheets and one deciding set scoresheet • Libero Tracking Sheets – One Libero Tracking Sheet (LTS) should be sufficient for a five-set match, but having an extra is a good idea • Lineup Sheets – If the lineup sheets have space to enter all sets of the match, each team needs only one. Otherwise, a sufficient number of single-set lineup sheets for the entire match is required • Pens – Two blue (or black) pens and two red pens

  12. Scenario – Scoring a Sample Set To give you practice in keeping score, we will now proceed through a sample set. Please have a blank scoresheet, a black (or blue) pen, and a red pen at hand. To begin, we will look at what should be entered onto the scoresheet prior to the start of the set. We will then present a series of playing events and demonstrate how to record them.

  13. Scenario – Scoring a Sample Set The sample set covers a wide variety of events and potential situations. The objective is to learn the proper procedures for recording these events and situations. Many of the events described in this sample set rarely occur and will realistically not all happen in a typical set or match. The objective is to learn the proper procedure for recording the event and how to apply it to the specific play rather than to expect your future sets to present similar situations.

  14. Sample Set – Information/Action Boxes Information Game Situation Scorer Action Libero Tracker Action As you go through the slides, you will see several text boxes like this one. These boxes will describe information that will be useful for keeping score and tracking the libero. You can press the space bar or click the mouse to move forward. Boxes like this will appear to illustrate particular game situations. You can then click on options to view the techniques for recording those situations on the scoresheet and Libero Tracking Sheet. You can also skip to the next topic. These boxes will describe the scorer’s actions. They will be accompanied by sample scoresheets to show exactly how actions should be recorded. These boxes will describe the assistant scorer’s (libero tracker’s) actions. They will be accompanied by sample Libero Tracking Sheets to show exactly how actions should be recorded. 16. Information Information It is Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the UNC Invitational Classic held at the Fetzer Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This is the first set of a Women’s Division 1 match (match #1). North Carolina State is playing Texas A&M. It is Saturday and the match is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The first referee is Keith Murlless and the second referee is Mary Blalock. Peter Cruz and Suzanne Dodd are line judges and you are the scorer. We are going to work through a sample set to see how to use a scoresheet and Libero Tracking Sheet.

Although lineups are initially due no later than the three-minute mark on the clock timing pre-match warm-ups, the scorer should not release the lineups to third parties such as statisticians and announcers until lineups are finalized at the one-minute mark. For the first set, teams may freely change their lineups until one minute remains on the clock timing pre-match warm-ups. With one minute remaining in the pre-match warm-ups, or after the lineup is submitted for sets two to five, no changes may be made to the lineup sheet after it is submitted to the scorer unless a substitution is used. Teams may not see lineups submitted by the opposing team. 4 1 9 2c 6 8 4 3 5 8c KEITH MURLESS MARY BLALOCK KEVIN GOULD PETER CRUZ SUZANNE DODD

We have not yet begun the match, so there is no need to record the items on this slide. Only #9 may re-enter the set for the libero; a proper replacement results in the same number being entered on both the left and right of the “L” on the tracking sheet. The AS must notify the second referee immediately if an improper libero replacement occurs. After the next rally, the A&M libero, #13, replaces #9. This replacement is recorded in a similar fashion, except an “L” is used to indicate the libero’s entry. Remember, we no longer slash the numbers, or the “L”, for libero replacements. State requests a substitution, #7 for #11. The AS records that action by slashing the “11” and writing a “7” immediately to the right of the of the slashed “11”. The AS also keeps track of total team substitutions and slashes the next number in the Team Substitutions area of the LTS. As the set progresses, remember to place tally marks in the Service column as each player begins their term of service. Remember, if a player serves multiple times within the term of service, only one tally mark is entered for that term. | 3 4 | | 5 8c /

Document the score, team involved, referee action, and uniform numbers if applicable. Comments are noted for: • Exceptional Substitutions • Disqualifications • Significant Corrections • Protests requested, but denied (new for 2017) • Scorer Errors – If the scorer makes a mistake, the mistake is crossed out with an “X” and the correct symbol is written. • Forfeits – If a set is forfeited before its start, the scorer prepares the scoresheet by filling in the heading, officials’ names, lineup of players and/or team present and a score of 25-0, then writes FORFEIT across the scoresheet. If more than one set of the match is forfeited, the same scoresheet is used for all sets with additional set numbers circled in the SET section. The scorer then signs the scoresheet.

However, because this is an exceptional substitution, circle the entire notation. Write #3 next to #4 in the PLAYERS’ NUMBER column. Instead of slashing the ‘4’ as you would with a normal substitution, circle the ‘4’. This indicates an exceptional substitution, and also makes it clear that #4 may not return to play in this set. Make an entry in the COMMENTS section indicating that an exceptional substitution took place. First, record point 17 for A&M. Notice the we do not slash the next number in the SUBSTITUTIONS section. 49. Information The Deciding Set Scoresheet A different scoresheet is used for the deciding set of the match because the teams switch sides of the court while the set is in progress (when the first team scores eight points). To accommodate that switch, the scoresheet is divided into three scoring sections.

  50. Information There is also a deciding set section on the Libero Tracking Sheet. The “CP” column on the far right stands for “Current Player”. When the teams change sides, the last entry on each line on the far left is recorded in the “CP” column on the far right (thus, “current player”). If the libero is on the court at the time of the court switch, both the replaced player’s number and the “L” are recorded on the far right side.
