  1. Ch.7 Percents Fractions, Decimals, & Percents Percent proportion & equation Circle graphs

  2. 7-1 fractions and percents • Percent- a ratio that compares a number to 100 • To write a percent as a fraction: • Take off the percent sign and write the number over 100 • Simplify the fraction • To write a fraction as a percent: • Try to change the denominator to 100 then multiply the numerator by the same factor • Use a proportion to solve for a number over 100 • Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, and move the decimal 2 places to the right.

  3. Percents and Decimals • To change a percent to a decimal: • Divide by 100 (move the decimal 2 places left) • Take off the percent sign • To change a decimal to a percent: • Multiply by 100 (move the decimal 2 places right) • Put a percent sign on your number • Remember: • A decimal is any number without a percent sign. • You can not multiply or divide a number in percent form

  4. Percent Proportion a = P b 100 a = the part, b = the whole, and P = the percent _a_ is _P_% of _b_? Put in the values you know and use cross products to find the missing piece.

  5. Percent Equation • a = p% • b • Part equals percent times whole • Write the equation and solve (change percent) • 6 is what percent of 30? • What is 15% of 40? • 36 is 60% of what number?

  6. Percent of change • To find an increase or decrease: • Subtract the original and the new amounts • Divide by the original • Multiply by 100 to change to a percent • Label as an inc. or dec. (is the new larger or smaller than the original) • To find a new amount • Change the percent to a decimal • Multiply by the original • Add for an inc.(markup), or Subtract for a decrease

  7. Simple and Compound Interest • Simple Interest I = prt • Amount of Interest is equal to the Principal times the interest rate(change to a decimal) times the time (in years). • Compound Interest A = P(1 + r)t • Account Balance is equal to the Principal times the sum of 1 and the interest rate (as a decimal) to the power of time (in years).

  8. Circle Graphs • Display information as parts of a whole • To find degrees multiply the percent by 360o • To read information from a graph, multiply the percent by the total amount.
