  1. The Methane Bomb ! How to you mix oxygen and methane to make an EXPLOSION?

  2. Balance the following equation: ___CH4 + ______O2 === ____ CO2 + ____H2O Avagadro’s Law: Equal volume of two gases at the same temperature and pressure contain EQUAL numbers of molecules. How should the volume of Oxygen gas compare with the volume of Methane so neither gas is left over?

  3. Methane and Oxygen 1:2 Methane Methane and Air 50-50

  4. Which one is pure methane?

  5. Lighting the bag of pure methane at the top of the bag. Double click on movie to start. (movies must be inserted into your ppt Click for next page

  6. Methane is lighter than air…it only burns at the edges of the ball of rising methane taking a longer time to burn and burns yellow indicating incomplete combustion.

  7. Methane and air…notice the change in color and speed of burn. Double click movie to start. Click here for next page

  8. Incomplete combustion inside the bag needing oxygen from the air to complete burning…. faster than the lst example.

  9. CH 4 + 2 O 2 == 2 H 2 O + CO 2 1volume methane to 2 volumes oxygen Double click on movie to start.

  10. Twice the volume contains twice the number of molecules of oxygen as methane so complete combustion can occur within the bag and is much faster! The explosion is quite loud…students should be at least 10 feet away….also there is possibility of hot plastic if too close. Don’t expect to do it just once! The expense of having a large bottle and regulator of oxygen is well worth its use during the year.
