  1. August 2009 Mrs. Jarabek’s 7th Grade Language Arts

  2. Agenda – August 8, 2009 • Pick up 1 copy of each handout at the front of the room: notebook paper, tabs, syllabus, binder • Make sure your pencil is sharpened and you’re ready to start class • In your agenda, copy down the homework on left side of board • Do your bell work and place in your binder under the Journal tab. Please date it.In 1 or more paragraphs, answer the following writing prompt: I like _____ better than ______ because . . .

  3. Agenda – August 8, 2009 • Review syllabus in class • Assemble binders

  4. Homework – August 8 • Get your syllabus signed by your parents and return to me by August 10 • Finish reading the two (or three) novels you read over the summer. • Skim through the books one more time. Expect a reading quiz on Friday -- not on The Outsiders.

Agenda - Tue., August 9 • Pick up 1 copy of each handout including analogies, grammar book, vocab book. • Sharpen your pencil if it needs it. • Write down your homework in your agenda. • Do bell work, the analogies handout, and place in your binder behind the Journal tab. • Turn in your syllabus. • Using a Sharpie, write your name on front cover and fore-edge of your text books. • Lesson on what is a compare and contrast essay.

  6. Homework - Tue., August 9 • Get your syllabus signed by your parents and return to me by August 10. • Finish reading the two (or three) novels you read over the summer. The book that you chose is due Friday. Expect a reading quiz. • Start revising the paragraph you wrote in your journal yesterday. Are you including the elements of a compare/contrast essay? What details do you need to add? Create a short outline for your comparison/contrast essay.

  7. Agenda – Wed., August 10, 2009 • Pick up 1 copy each of any handouts at the front of the room. • Sharpen your pencil. • Write down your homework in your agenda. • Bell work - roots. File this under vocabulary. • Turn in your syllabus. • Lesson on vocabulary: affixes, roots, connotation v. denotation, how to study for vocabulary.

  8. Homework - Wed., August 10 • Turn in your syllabus NOW. • Vocabulary unit 1 and roots 1 due Fri, 8/12 • Finish reading summer novels. Expect a reading quiz. Start skimming them. • Vocabulary quiz next Wednesday, 8/17

  9. Agenda - Thu., August 11 • Pick up 1 copy each of handouts at the front of the room • Sharpen your pencil. • Do your bell work – a work sheet on punctuation and capitalization. File under Grammar. • Review bell work. • Lesson on nouns.

  10. Homework - Thu., August 11 • Turn in your syllabus NOW. • Vocabulary unit 1 and roots 1 due Fri, 8/12 • Finish reading summer novels. Expect a reading quiz. Start skimming them. • Vocabulary quiz next Wednesday, 8/19 • Grammar homework due Mon, 8/17

Agenda - Fri., August 11 • Give me your vocabulary book. • Sharpen your pencil. • Copy your homework into your agenda. • Take the hero journey reading quiz for the novel you read over the summer. • Create an interesting lead-in to your comparison/contrast essay. Re-write your essay to follow your outline. File under Journal tab. Due Tue. 8/17. • Review vocabulary and root homework.

  12. Homework – Fri., August 11 • Grammar homework due Monday. • Re-writing comparison/contrast essay due Tuesday, 8/18.

Agenda – Mon., August 17 • Give me your grammar books. • Collect any handouts at the front of the room. • Sharpen your pencil. • Write down your homework. • Bell work – no bell work. • Lesson – What is an archetype? What is a hero’s journey? Watch documentary on Star Wars as a hero journey. Complete your hero journey wheel as you watch. Other resources -

  14. Agenda – Tue., August 18 • Sharpen pencil. • Write down your homework. • Bell work – Choose 10 of the root and vocabulary words you are the least familiar with and write sentences about them. Do as homework if you don’t finish in class. File under vocabulary tab. • Review grammar homework. • Lesson – Hero’s Journey. Continue watching Star Wars documentary and taking notes.

  15. Agenda – Wed., Aug. 19 • Collect any handouts at front of room. • Sharpen pencil. • Write down homework. • Take vocab quiz. • When you finish quiz, begin roots work for next week. • Watch Star Wars documentary and take notes.

  16. Homework – Wed., August, 19 • Homework – Vocabulary and Roots for unit 2, due Fri. 8/21.

  17. Agenda – Thu., August 20 • Collect handouts at front of room. • Sharpen pencil. • Do bell work – handout on punctuation and capitalization. • Review handout. • Lesson – More nouns.

  18. Homework -- Thu., August 20 • Prepare for The Outsiders’ Reading Quiz on Monday.

  19. Agenda -- Fri., August 21 • Sharpen pencil • Collect all of your papers from your journal section of your notebook. Staple them together, make sure your name is on the packet, and turn in to me. • Review vocabulary and roots homework. • Finish watching Star Wars documentary and taking notes.

  20. Homework -- Fri., August 21 • Bring in your hero journey novel on Monday. • Grammar homework due Monday.

  21. Agenda -- Mon., August 24 • Pick up a hero journey cycle chart. • Sharpen your pencil. • Review grammar homework. • In groups, complete the hero journey cycle using the novel you read over the summer. If your group doesn’t finish, complete it as homework at home. Be prepared to know the elements of a hero journey cycle if tested. • I will return any graded papers as you work. • Time permitting, I’ll answer questions on the graded papers.
