  1. The New Evangelization and our Little Ones

  2. What is Evangelization? • Evangelization is the supreme duty to proclaim Christ to all peoples. (JPII) • The Church is missionary in nature; thus evangelization is the duty of all Christians: Pope Paul VI stated that “Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exist in order to evangelize.”

  3. What is the “New Evangelization”? • The term “New Evangelization” is not a way of proposing a new message because its content is still the one gospel given by Jesus. • That message is salvation through Jesus Christ. • It is a call to each person to deepen his or her own faith, have confidence in the Gospel, and possess a willingness to share the gospel.

  4. How does the “The New Evangelization” effect us? • It is a PERSONAL encounter with the person of Jesus which brings peace and joy. • It provides the lens through which people experience the Church and world around them. • We are invited to experience God’s love and mercy through sacramental encounters with Jesus in the Eucharist and Penance.

  5. The Basis of the New Evangelization • We must continually renew our faith. This is the basis of New Evangelization. • We are called to renew our faith so that we can share it with others. • Before one can evangelize, one must be evangelized. This is the focus!

  6. Characteristics of the New Evangelization • It is founded on the person of Jesus and His gospel. • Jesus is the center of the universe and of History. • Salvation is offered to all men as a gift of God’s grace and mercy

  7. Characteristics of the New Evangelization • It is the responsibility of the People of God not just missionaries, priests, deacons, and religious. • It is a matter for all Christians, dioceses, parishes, Church institutions and associations.

  8. Who is responsible for the “New Evangelization”? • Experiencing the life giving message as Good News for all is embraced by all in the Church • Bishops are responsible for the work of evangelization • Priests are by vocation responsible to stir up the missionary consciousness of the faithful. • Religious give testimony of the values of the Kingdom of God. • Laity witness to the Good News in their family life and the market place. • The laity must be trained and released into the service of evangelization as missionaries of the New Evangelization. • The Holy Spirit is the one who leads this endeavor.

  9. The response of the New Evangelization to Today’s World • Problems in the culture confronting modern man: • Secularism, globalization, social communications, the economy, scientific and technological research, civic and political life

  10. The who and why of the NEW EVANGELIZATION • We are to reach out to the inactive or missing brothers and sisters through touching their lives, reaching out to them, and helping them know how to answer life’s important questions. • The New Evangelization offers the gifts of faith, hope and love and new life in Jesus. Our hope is a person, Jesus.

  11. Targets of “The New Evangelization” • Individual unbelievers • Non-practicing Christians • Entire cultures who need to be re-evangelized or do not believe in Jesus • Those with little or no training in the Faith need to be evangelized with the basic Gospel and receive formation in the faith.

  12. Where does the New Evangelization especially need to take place? • In countries where there are entire groups of baptized who have lost a living sense of the faith or no longer consider themselves members of the Church. • Here the New Evangelization is really a “re-evangelization”.

  13. The Missionary spirit and the New Evangelization according to JPII • The basis of sharing the life of Christ with others is life in Christ. • We are called to know Christ and to make Him known. • In order to pass on the Gospel to others, it must have first permeated our lives. • Every member of the faithful is called to holiness and to mission. • The one who proclaims the Good News must be a person who has found true hope in Christ.

  14. Witness is essential • Modern man listens more willingly to witness than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses. • What is does this witness look like? The conduct of one’s life; it is a witness to sanctity. • The openness to Christ is a moment of Conversion. This is brought about by the witness of a Christian whose hope is in Jesus.

  15. Key Components: a review • It is a call to each person to deepen his or her own faith, have confidence in the Gospel, and possess a willingness to share the gospel. • We must continually renew our faith. • It is a PERSONAL encounter with the person of Jesus which brings peace and joy. • We are invited to experience God’s love and mercy through the sacraments: Eucharist and Penance. • Those with little or no training in the Faith need to be evangelized with the basic Gospel and receive formation in the faith.

  16. Key Components (a review) • Before one can evangelize, one must be evangelized. • The one who proclaims the Good News must be a person who has found true hope in Christ. • The New Evangelization offers hope. Our hope is a person, Jesus. • Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses. • Every member of the faithful is called to holiness and to mission (this is how we WITNESS!)

  17. Children’s Bible Stories • Make a great way of sharing the Word of God at an appropriate level. • Allows them to focus on a message while enjoying a short story. • Children can share their favorite ones by reading them over again.

  18. Lives of Saints • Have books on the saints at grade level available. • Share short stories of the saints to start class or as night time stories • Ask for a favorite saints intercession. • franciscanmissions.org

  19. Singing songs of faith • This CD series is a fun way to learn about the faith. • They have fun/catchy songs that young ones enjoy singing while learning about the faith at the same time. • The stories are faith-filled and hold their attention.

  20. Family Holy Hour • Monthly at St. Patrick and St. Joan of Arc • Done on the First Friday of each month • Comprises of Adoration, songs, Gospel reading, child centered homily, prayers, quiet time and benediction. • Decade of the rosary with intentions for each Hail Mary. • Helps children to experience Jesus and the life of the church in a family centered way. • Parents WITNESS to faith by coming as a family

  21. Family Night Prayer • Repetition in prayer helps little ones to incorporate it into their daily lives. • Night prayer from the Liturgy of Hours has consistent parts that allow young ones to join in without having to know how to read. The response to the reading and the antiphon and gospel canticle stay the same. • Additional prayers that are the same/predictable are also ways to boost participation.

  22. Prayer time in the classroom • Have an intention list
