  1. # 6. AIDS By Madison hatfield 6th period

  2. Background Information - AIDS AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome): a serious and often fatal disease that is spread by blood products (especially sexually contact and contaminated needles). AIDS is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). 2/3 of all people living with AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. During 2000, 3 million people died from AIDS worldwide. 2.4 million of these people lived in sub-Saharan Africa.

  3. Thesis AIDS has a devastating impact on the people of sub-Saharan Africa; including their education system, hospitals, and life expectancy.

  4. Education System In Swaziland and the Central African Republic, school enrollment has fallen 25-30% due to AIDS. 21% of teachers living in South Africa aged 25-34 are living with AIDS. Children may be removed from school to care for family members, or may have AIDS themselves. THE IMPACT: Young peoplewith little or no education are twice as likely to contract HIV than those who have completed primaryeducation. Comparison on next slide.

  5. Comparison – World Literacy Map As shown, Africa is easily the continent with the lowest percentage of people that are literate.

  6. Hospitals In sub-Saharan Africa, people with HIV-related diseases account for half of all hospital beds. HIV-positive patients stay in the hospital up to four times longer than other patients. Between 1999 and 2005, Botswana lost 17% of it’s healthcare workers due to AIDS. (Comparison on next slide).

  7. Comparison - Hospitals African hospital - Uganda • American hospital - Texas African countries need sufficient hospitals in order to treat the staggering number of diseases, specifically AIDs cases.

  8. AIDS Patients

  9. Life Expectancy In worst affected countries, the average life expectancy has fallen by twenty years due to AIDS. EX: Swaziland – Life expectancy at birth is only 31 years, which is half of what it would be without AIDS. Life expectancy of Zambia is 37.2. Life expectancy of Swaziland is 33.2. Life expectancy of Botswana is 33.9 Life expectancy of Lesotho is 34.5. Comparison on next slide.

  10. Comparison – World Life Expectancy As you can see, Africa is by far the continent with the lowest life expectancy.

  11. So What/Conclusion 60% of ALL deaths in sub-Saharan Africa are caused by AIDS in adults aged 20-49. In 1985, this number was 20%. At this rate, numbers will be skyrocketing in the next 10-20 years. Many cases of AIDS remain undetected for years. This causes many issues. For example, if a mother bears a child without knowing she is HIV positive, her child has a high risk of contracting AIDS and dying at birth. (graph on the next page)

  12. According to the graphs, the number of AIDS deaths would grow in the next ten years, especially without treatment.

  13. U.S. Relevance In total, about 1,052,000 people have been diagnosed with AIDS in America since 1981 (the outbreak). Since 1981; 583,291 people have died from AIDs in America. • Africa – 1.4 million people in sub-Saharan Africa died of AIDs in 2008. This is more than have ever been diagnosed with AIDs in America.

  14. Test Question Which of these is not an effect of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa? A. Hospitals are crowded, and patients get less individual care. B. Children are less educated C. Life expectancy decreases over time D. Food supply decreases. E. Many children die at birth from cases going undetected Answer on the next slide…

  15. Answer: D. Food supply decreases. This does not relate to the effect of AIDS in any way. However, the other four choices are clearly effects of AIDS, as shown in the powerpoint.
