About Eric Carle • Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929 • Moved to Germany when he was 6 • Graduated from prestigious art school (Akademie der bildenden Künste) • Worked as a graphic designer for The New York Times • Was asked to illustrate Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr. • The secret of Eric Carle’s books’ appeal lies in his intuitive understanding of and respect for children • Is married with two children
