  2. PURPOSE • THE GOAL OF THIS SLIDE SHOW IS TO GIVE YOU A VISUAL PRESENTATION OF LUGULU HOSPITAL AFTER A VISIT/TOUR OF THE PLACE AND TALKING TO THE STAFF AND THE OVERALL ADMINISTRATOR REV. FATHER MARCELLUS. • THE HOSPITAL SERVES LUGULU DIVISION IN BUNGOMA DISTRICT OF WESTERN PROVINCE IN THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA. THE AREA IS INHABITED BY SUBSISTACE FARMERS WHO JUST GROW ENOUGH FOR FOOD, WITH VERY LITTLE SURPLUS TO SALE FOR CASH TO PAY FOR OTHER NECESSARY BASIC NEEDS. • IT IS THE ONLY HOSPITAL IN AN AREA OF ABOUT 250,000 PEOPLE THAT PROVIDES MEDICAL SERVICES AT A SUBSIDICED FEE, OR NO FEES AT ALL FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY ANYTHING DUE TO POVERTY. TODAY LUGULU FACES FINANCIAL HARDSHIP AND A MAJOR FUNDRAISING DRIVE IS IN PLACE. • THE CHICAGO ASSOCIATION OF KENYAN PROFESSIONALS (CAKP) HAS TAKEN UP THE PROJECT OF RAISING FUNDS AND GETTING EQUIPMENT TO ASSIST THE HOSPITAL. • THE SLIDE SHOW IS A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE HOSPITAL’S CURRENT STATUS

  4. MISSION STATEMENT • LUGULU HOSPITAL Mission Statement: In a responsible and respectful way, we provide sustainable, efficient and good quality physical and non-physical care to our patients, with a special attention to women and children.

  5. Excellence Award RECOGNITION: • The hospital won an award for being one of the most improved hospital in the country in 2003. • Lugulu continues to strive to maintain high standards even with meager resources.

  6. Voluntary Counseling and Testing HIV/AIDS: • VCT-Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centre. This is what has helped fight the scrooge of HIV/AIDS. Locals are encouraged to go to these free centers around the country. These centers have increased awareness and helped in reducing the spread of the virus.

  7. VCT-Counselor VCT – COUNSELOR: • There is only one clinical officer that the hospital can afford to have on the staff full time. • A lack of resources has reduced the patient capacity that the hospital can handle.

  8. Men’s Ward MEN’S WARD: • A section of the men’s ward in the hospital. Since the building of the hospital. The beds have never been replaced.

  9. Women’s Ward WOMEN’S WARD: • A section of the women’s ward. It is in better condition than the men’s ward, but still needs improvement.

  10. Pharmacy THE PHARMACY: • For a hospital of its size, the pharmacy is heavily under stocked, but still just manages to maintain a steady supply of essential generic drugs that can serve the public.

  11. Laboratory LABORATORY EQUIPMENT: • There is only one working microscope in the hospital laboratory. • The laboratory is poorly equipped and urgently needs basic equipment to serve the needs of the public.

  12. Blood Bank FREEZER: • There is no freezer, but they use a basic fridge that serves the purpose of a cold storage facility for the hospital’s blood bank and essential drugs that require refrigeration.

  13. Operating Theatre THE THEATRE: • There is a small poorly equipped theatre where all the operations both minor and major are performed in the hospital.

  14. Stretcher STRETCHERS: • There are only four working stretchers in the hospital.

  15. Ultra-Sound Machine • ULTRA-SOUND MACHINE: The only machine in the hospital and in the region covering three Districts. The next hospital that has an ultra-sound machine is a University/referral hospital which is over 150 miles away.

  16. Water Tank • WATER STORAGE: The water tank that serves the entire hospital . Water is pumped to the tank from a well in the compound. The tank helps in maintaining running water in all the parts of the hospital.

  17. Laundry THE LAUNDRY: • The manual laundry area of the hospital for all the linen used by patients. They are just cemented troughs.

  18. Laundry • LINEN COLLECTION: The collected linen waiting to be washed by hand. The hospital cannot afford even simple a washing machine.

  19. Staff Schedule • DUTY SCHEDULES: This is done manually on a scheduling board for hospital staff duty allocation.

  20. Accounting Department COMPUTERS: • There is only one working computer in the hospital in the accountant’s office. • They have no accurate filing system and all patient records are kept manually in log books.

  21. Patient Logs LOG BOOKS: • Some of the Log books for hospital records.

  22. Educational Posters POSTERS: • Some educational material on HIV/AIDS displayed on the board in the hospital for public education/awareness.

  23. Meeting VISIT/TOUR: • A meeting with Father Marcellus, the hospital administrator for a detailed brief before taking the hospital tour.

  24. GOALS • OBTAIN FUNDING FOR LUGULU • OBTAIN BASIC EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES THAT CAN KEEP THE HOSPITAL OPEN AND FUNCTIONING: SERVING THE NEEDY PUBLIC WHO HAVE VERY LITTLE OR NO MONEY TO PAY FOR THEIR MEDICAL BILLS AND OTHER NECESSARY BASIC NEEDS. LUGULU DOES A LOT WITH VERY LITTLE RESOURCES, BUT THEY CAN DO A LOT MORE IF THEY ARE ASSISTED IN CASH AND KIND. CONTINUED SUPPORT WILL HELP LUGULU HOSPITAL TO MAINTAIN ITS MISSION OF SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC WITH A FOCUS ON THE MOST VULNARABLE: WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
