  1. Joshua 6 Break the Walls DOWN!

  2. The rugged walls of Jericho featured a stone base 11 feet high, topped by 35 feet of smooth stone sloping upward at 35 degrees to join the towering main walls. Direct assault would have been nearly impossible Artist's reconstruction of the north side of ancient Jericho, based on the German excavations of 1907-1909. Note the houses built against the mud brick city wall, which rests on top of the stone retaining wall. The Bible says that Rahab's house was built against the city wall (Joshua 2:15).

  3. Victory is Assured Because of God Presence and our… Obedience • Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in." – Joshua 6:2-5 NIV • “When we are obedient, God guides our steps and our stops.” Corrie ten Boom (1892–1983)

  4. Victory is Assured Because of God Presence and our… Obedience • Why is obedience so important? • A) Obedience to God is very important in your Christian growth. • B) The greatest commandment is to love God by keeping His commandments. (Matthew 22:36-38) • C) John 14:15 says, "If you love me, you will obey what I command.” • Our obedience to the things God has called us to do is directly link to our faith in Him. • “Faith and obedience are bound up in the same bundle. He that obeys God, trusts God; and he that trusts God, obeys God.” - Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) • Joshua response was swift and sure. • So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant of the LORD and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it." 7 And he ordered the people, "Advance! March around the city, with the armed guard going ahead of the ark of the LORD.“ – Joshua 6:6-7

  5. Victory is Assured Because of God Presence and our… Patience • “A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains.” - Dutch Proverb • Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the LORD and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. •  On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. – Joshua 6:12-15 • The city of Jericho was, some say, about 30 square miles around. • They would march around 43 times = 1,290 square miles • Priest would have to carry horns and the Ark of the Covenant • They would truly need patience.

  6. Victory is Assured Because of God Presence and our… Patience • Patience means cheerful endurance • (1 Samuel 30:6 NKJV) Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God. • (Isaiah 40:28-31 NKJV) Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. {29} He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. {30} Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, {31} But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. • (Luke 8:15 NKJV) "But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

  7. Victory is Assured Because of God Presence and our… Dedication • The Ark of the Covenant symbolically represented God in their midst so when they carry it, they symbolically bring God – not chariots, not swords, not spears. – Dedicated people realize they take Him with them wherever they go! • The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the people, "Shout! For the LORD has given you the city! The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the LORD. – Joshua 6:16:17 • According to John 17:6-26 – dedication is: • they may be one, as we are one; I (Christ) in them (followers) and you (Father) in me, that they may become one and perfectly united • not to be taken out of the world, but to be protected in the world from evil • having the fullness of Christ's joy in your hearts and souls • having the love given by the Father to Christ in your (followers) hearts • being with Christ to see his glory, and still here on the earth too • being dedicated, sanctified, consecrated, and made holy here • being perfectly united (this is the unity of the faith)

  8. Conclusion • Breaking down the walls in your life is done through the help of the Holy Spirit. • All you need is: • Obedience – Do that which the Father calls you to do • Patience – Some things are not resolved quickly • Dedication – surrender your wills and desires to the Lord and allow Him to work IN and THROUGH you!
