Gynandromorphy is not the avian equivalent of intersexism/hermaphroditism. • In humans, gender identity is not necessarily determined by biological sex. • Can be influenced by pre- and post-natal hormone levels and gene regulation • Humans’ somatic cells start off unisex; they don’t develop into male or female cells (though marked by chromosomes) until gonads begin developing hormones • Birds are unique in that cells don’t wait for hormonal cues from sex organs to determine gender—they know whether they’re male or female (or both!) from the start. Once determined, gender cannot change.

  3. Gynandromorphy: Scientific, Not Psychological • Gynandromorphy in birds is not a psychological issue—it only occurs when some cells are chromosomal males and some cells are chromosomal females. • Gynandromorphy is not a syndrome that develops. A bird is decidedly gynandromorphic, male, or female by the end of the first embryonic stages.
