  1. Using the Curvilinear Coordinate Interface for Heat Transfer Modeling • This presentation accompanies a model .mph file that showcases how the Curvilinear Coordinate Interface can be used to define anisotropic materials where their anisotropy follows the bent shapes. • Automatic computation of curvilinear coordinate systems was introduced in version 4.3b in May 2013.

  2. Geometry CarbonFibers Epoxy Matrix Note: The geometry can in principle be reduced using symmetry axes if the physical settings are also symmetric, which is the case in this model. This is however not done in this example in order to simplify the instructions.

  3. Fiber Orientation • The fibers have a high thermal conductivity in the direction of the fiber and a low thermal conductivity in the perpendicular direction. • The Curvilinear Coordinates interface is used to define a coordinate system that follows the fiber orientation.

  4. Heat Transfer: Anisotropicfiberproperties • The generatedcurvilinearcoordinate system isused for the fiber. • Anisotropicconductivityistakenfrom the materialdefinition.

  5. Heat Transfer: Infiniteelements • Infinitedomains (blue) are defined to approximate a large structure • A model .mph file isalsoprovidedwithoutInfiniteelementsthatdoes not require the Heat Transfer Module but just the core package.

  6. AmbientTemperature on ExteriorBoundary

  7. Convective Cooling of Surfaces

  8. Incident Heat Flux onto One of the Faces

  9. TemperatureField on the Surface

  10. Fibers (black) and Isothermal Surfaces
