  1. COMING FULL CIRCLE Mallard Creek and UNCC PDS Work Plan Outcomes

  2. According to our PDS Work Plan, Mallard Creek High School and UNCC are working together to: Improve literacy skills of all students by increasing reading and writing instruction and/or support across the content areas. This goal serves to improve student achievement and help teachers with performance on the new teacher evaluation instrument which now includes aspects of content area reading support. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  3. We are accomplishing this by: • Providing monthly in-house professional development for teachers; including the new Teacher Evaluation Instrument which has greatly increased the focus of reading and writing and addressing rigor in the content areas. • Providing an on site literacy facilitator for reading/ writing staff development on increasing reading and writing instruction across the content areas. • Providing opportunities for teachers to observe lead teachers exhibiting strengths in areas they feel they need improvement. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  4. Utilizing the Data Wise committee to analyze and discuss data collected from various State, District and school assessment results. The results are used to improve instruction to reach all students’ needs and identify at-risk students who need additional time and support. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  5. Example: In an effort to improve rigor on school midterm and final assessments, the committee collected data on Marzano verbs that were used in content assessments and presented it to the staff for discussion and further analysis during their weekly PLC meetings. The results were used to revise common assessments and in most cases, to improve rigor. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  6. Example: Reflection What Does The Data Say? Find the student who showed the highest growth in the course. Describe that student in terms of attendance, seat in the classroom, classroom participation, parental contacts, assessment grades, and other descriptors not listed. Find the student in the course that showed the least amount of growth. Describe that student in terms of attendance, seat in the classroom, classroom participation, parental contacts, assessment grades and other descriptors not listed. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  7. Establishing professional learning communities by providing teachers time for collaborating on effective teaching strategies and the development of common formative and summative assessments used to improve student learning. • Common planning of most core curriculum • SMART Goals and Norms • Action Plans • Department Chair and Departmental Meetings • Obtaining innovative technological resources which will provide opportunities for teachers to design interventions for students who have not demonstrated learning and to enhance teaching by providing enrichment opportunities for students who have demonstrated learning. • Clickers, SmartBoards, document cameras, projectors • Study Island, Castle Gate, Thinkgate, DiscoveryEd Mallard Creek High School PDS

  8. Literacy by Design - Over the summer a group of teachers attended professional development as part of the Gates Funding for this project. • Becky Graf provided initial staff development to introduce literacy strategies into the content areas. Short readings from Reading in the Disciplines and open, small group discussions were among some of the activities for staff meetings. • Members piloted writing prompts to develop content planning. • School Literacy Committee formed with some of the LBD members providing leadership. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  9. MCHS Literacy Committee - Meets bi-monthly to discuss implementation and/or improvement of literacy strategies and provide in-house staff development to faculty. • Example: During an after school faculty meeting, teachers were asked to identify literacy strategies used in a lesson plan they brought with them. They were then asked to work in their PLCs to enrich the plan by collaboratively working to improve the quality of the literacy activities already included. • “All students read and write” is the focus of the committee and has led to the current effort to incorporate reading and writing into all contents and creating a school-wide rubric for expectations of writing assignments. Mallard Creek High School PDS

  10. Utilizing pre-service teachers enrolled in UNCC Content Area Reading courses in our Extended Day credit recovery program. 200+ Students will be attempting recovery credits in one OR more (up to 3) courses in a 9-week period. • 30 hours of seat time M-Thur 2:30-5 pm (Transportation provided) • Projects and/or assignments involving Castle Learning and Study Island that will require time outside of the classroom are required. • A portfolio containing artifacts of student products and/or work samples will also be required . A committee will be assigned to evaluate the artifacts and assign EOC credit if acceptable. • Tutors from UNCC Content Area Reading courses will assist the teachers in a pilot program for future partnerships. 12. EOC Proficiencies **C&E is one of our focus groups for 2010/2011. One of the teachers is part of the LBD committee and is working with the C&E PLC to create writing prompts to use for planning. They are also creating new common formative assessments to be used with clickers to get instant feedback on the student level of understanding for preparation of remediation or enrichment strategies.
