History of SMS • Special Mine Services, Inc. is an employee owned company. • Special Mine Services (SMS) Connectors, founded in 1983 by Les Huntsman and George Kee, specialize in the molding of rubber connectors used in mining, tunneling, heavy industry, and the entertainment industries. Corporate offices and manufacturing facilities are located in West Frankfort, Illinois with satellite locations in Petersburg, Indiana and Central City, Kentucky, and with a sales office in Toronto, Canada. • Our products are routinely sold through reputable distributors which are selected from strategic locations across North America and world wide. We strive to provide the best service, manufacture quality products, and delivery at reasonable prices. • SMS Cable Connectors, We manufactures a complete line of molded neoprene single, multi-pole, and quick-lock connectors for the Entertainment, Mining, Tunneling, Industrial, and Government industries engineered and designed to be interchangeable and compatible with other major manufactured connectors, plus the ability to design any connector to a customer needs.

  3. Special Mine Services, Inc. History of SMS • SMS Mining We have been a major manufacturer of connectors used in the Mining Industry since 1960. Several of our workers have enjoyed over fifty years of experience. • All our connectors are interchangeable with other manufacturers. Also, SMS were instrumental in the development of a new lever action connector design which has become the industry standard in Canada and is achieving dominance in the United States. • Special Mine Service does not require a minimum order nor any special charges for special make items. We have our own in-house machine shop and do all our molding in-house. Capabilities from small single pole to large round multi-pole connectors to connectors accepting 500 MCM, 3 conductor, GGC and SHD type cable. • SMS Entertainment we manufactures a line of connectors used in the Entertainment Industry - all CSA and UL listed. All connectors are interchangeable with other manufacturers, a strategic advantage our product has over our competitors - the ease with which they go together. • The assembly process is the same on all styles from different manufactures. When the sleeve is pulled over the contact, one simply aligns the hole in the rubber sleeve with the hole in the contacts, Then, insert a phenolic retaining pin. The hole through the rubber sleeve is significantly smaller than the pin thereby creating a water-tight fit between the two parts.
