  1. Chapter 10 – Polynomials and Factoring 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form

  2. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Today we will be learning how to: • Solve a polynomial equation in factored form • Relate factors and x-intercepts

  3. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Factored form – written as the product of two or more linear factors • (2x – 3)(x + 5) = 0 • (2x – 3)(x + 5)(x – 7) = 0

  4. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Complete the following table:

  5. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • The product of two factors is zero only when at least one of the factors is zero • Zero-product property • Let a and b be real numbers. • If ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0

  6. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Example 1 Solve the equation (x – 4)(x + 1) = 0

  7. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Example 2 Solve (x + 8)2 = 0

  8. 10.4 – Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form • Example 3 Solve (3x – 2)(4x + 3)(x + 4) = 0
