  1. Focus Words English 9 2012

  2. Symbolism • A word, place, character, or object that means something beyond what it is on a literal level. • Examples: ~birds = freedom ~roses =love and beauty ~sun/light = life

  3. Imagery • Signifies all the sensory perceptions referred to in a poem (all five senses) • Examples: ~the ice cold wind ~the blindingly bright sun ~the pungent smell of cinnamon and pine trees

  4. Simile • A comparison of objects that uses the words like or as • Examples: ~like two peas in a pod ~a face like sunshine ~you change your mind like a girl changes clothes

  5. Theme • Central idea or statement that unifies and controls an entire literary work. It may be a single idea or a complicated doctrine • Examples: ~Progress ~Tolerance ~Seize-the-day

  6. Rhythm • The beat of the poem • Examples: “While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.” ~ “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe

  7. Meter • Varying pattern of stressed syllables alternating with syllables of less stress. Each unit of stress is called a “foot” • Example: ~Iambic Pentameter (less stressed followed by stressed, five feet ) /When I/ /do count/ /the clock/ /that tells/ /the time /

  8. Assonance • Repeating identical or similar vowel sounds • Examples: ~try to light the fire ~the crumbling thunder of seas ~I must confess that in my quest I felt depressed and restless

  9. Direct Characterization(tells) • Writer makes direct statements about a character’s personality and tells what the character is like • Examples: He was a moody all the time.

  10. Indirect Characterization (Shows) • The writer reveals information about a character’s personality through the character’s thoughts, words, and actions, along with how the other characters respond to him/her • Example: Tom used to sleep on newspapers. His clothes were dirty, and he rarely bathed.

  11. Foreshadow • Suggesting, hinting, indicating, or showing what will occur later in a narrative • Example: A nightmare about a coffin foreshadows the death of Mr. Pignati
