  4. 6 Components of Health • Physical health: the way your body functions • Emotional health: expressing your emotions in a positive, nondestructive way • Social health: quality of relationships with others

  5. 6 Components of Health • Mental health: ability to recognize reality & cope with demands of life • Spiritual health: maintaining pleasant relationships with other living things, having spiritual direction & purpose • Environmental health: keeping air & water clean, food safe, land enjoyable & safe

  6. CLUSTER ACTIVITY • Create a “Cluster of Health” Health

  7. Keeping A Balance • When everything is balanced you have a high degree of wellness (an overall state of well-being or total health) • Healthful behaviors will promote your wellness

  8. What Affects Your Health? • Heredity, environment, attitude, behavior, media, & technology can all influence your behavior • Heredity: all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents • Can put you at a higher risk for certain health issues

What Affects Your Health? • Environment: the sum of your surroundings • Physical environment: neighborhood & school safety; air & water quality; availability of parks, recreational facilities & libraries; access to medical care • Social environment: made up of all the people around you • Culture: the collective beliefs, customs & behaviors of a group

What Affects Your Health? • Attitude: the way you view situations can have a big effect on your health • Behavior: have full control over this • You can choose to avoid high-risk behaviors, eat healthy foods, exercise daily, ………. • Media & Technology: various methods for communicating information such as the radio, TV, the internet, & print media

  12. 6 Health Risk Behaviors • Sedentary lifestyle • Alcohol & other drug use • Sexual activity • Behavior that causes injuries • Tobacco use • Poor eating habits

Promoting Health & Wellness • A health conscious person knows how to find & use reliable health information (a person’s capacity to learn about & understand basic health information & services, & to use these resources to promote one’s health & wellness) • One must…. • Know where to find health information • Decide if the information is correct • Assess the risk & benefits of treatment • Figure out how much medicine to take • Understand test results
