  1. 6 + 1 Traits of Effective Writing •  Ideas •  Organization •  Voice •  Word Choice •  Sentence Fluency • Conventions •  Presentation

  2. IDEAS  The heart of the message, the content of the piece, the main theme, together with details, enrich and develop the theme.  Ideas are strong when the message is clear.  Ideas chosen are interesting, important, and informative.

  3. ORGANIZATION • The internal structure of the writing; the thread of central meaning, the pattern. • Can be developed in several ways; comparison/contrast, chronology, analysis, development of central theme, etc. • Strong organization uses logic, creates meaning, has strong connections so that the reader understands the purpose of the piece. • The piece closes with a sense of resolution.

  4. VOICE • The sense that a real person is involved in the writing. • Voice is the heart and soul of the writing. • The piece has its own unique tone and flavor.

  5. WORD CHOICE • The use of rich, colorful, precise language that moves and enlightens reader. • Clarifies and expands ideas. • Exhibits mastery of vocabulary necessary to convey the message.

  6. SENTENCE FLUENCY • The rhythm and flow of the language. • Fluent writing uses transitions and has power and rhythm. • Free of awkward word patterns. • Sentences vary in length and style, and are well crafted.

  7. CONVENTIONS • The mechanical correctness of the piece -- spelling, grammar and usage, paragraphing, use of capitals, and punctuation. • This writing has been proofread and edited with care.

  8. PRESENTATION • We will use the Helps Packet & the EDHS Writing Standards. • Included in this trait is neatness and readability. Text must be readable in order to be read and assessed. • This trait also includes graphs, maps etc.

  9. The Path to Improved Writing • Students will assess their own writing as well as the writing of their peers. • Knowing what is expected will help them to improve. • Providing a common language will help students identify areas where they excel as well as where they need improvement.
