  1. Travelling and the European Union Lesson 6

  2. Summary of the lesson

  3. Learning objectives • The children should be enabled to: • Revise the main points that we have learned on the EU • Use their own travel experiences to discuss and understand some travel rules • Explore how passport controls works in EU countries • Express through art their understanding of the EU

  4. Key words and materials • Key words: • Ireland, maps, Europe, continent, countries, globe, European union, similar, different, weather, food, money, currency, passport, airport, passport control • Materials: • Map/Globe of world/Europe, EU flag, passport covers for different countries, passport control signs, art sheets.

  5. Introduction to the lesson • Quickly revise with the children their understanding of the EU and what we have learned so far. • Elicit from the children how many member states there are in the EU. • Discuss with the children their experiences of travelling – elicit from them where they have travelled to – do we need a passport to travel to different counties in Ireland?, to travel to different countries? What happens at airports before you take off? What happens when you land etc.?

  6. Body of the lesson • Explain to the children that they are going on a trip. They are going to travel by airplane to an EU country…give them clues to guess where they are going – it has 8 letters, it begins with P, its flag is red and yellow, it is near Spain etc… • Explain to the children that they are going to be coming from different countries and they will have to decide which passport control area they will have to go through – an EU one or all other passports areas. Give out the passport covers and tell the children if necessary which country they are from • Then allow the children individual to decide which control to go to…let the children help/correct their classmates. • Collect all resources again.

  7. Conclusion of the lesson • Explain to the children that you want them to create a piece of art which shows what the EU means to them. Give out sheets.
